Patriots trade for 49er's OT Trent Brown

Mason is only costing them 2m this year, is worth much more than that, and I doubt they'd get much more for him in a trade than if they just waited and picked up a 2020 3rd-round comp pick.

I'm still hoping they extend him. Really like his attitude out there.

I think they were looking to upgrade Andrews here.

LT - LG - C

All need(ed) upgrading/improvement

Caserio said last night that they'll put everyone out on the field and then put the best 5 together.

If we trade Mason (or any other o-lineman) it will likely be during training camp or at cut down time. Doing it now is foolish. An injury or two and we would need all of them.

They will probably go into the year with 8-9 lineman, 4 of which are tackles, which is fairly standard. At the minute that looks like:

OT: Waddle, Cannon, Brown, Garcia
G/C: Wynn (possible tackle too), Andrews, Mason, Thuney, Croston

That is a pretty solid group and would leave the likes of Jelks, Tobin, Ferentz on the outside looking in. You do wonder why they felt they needed Brown though - he is a definitive RT. Do they think he can play on the left? Or is there an issue with Cannon? Maybe they have no confidence in Garcia for this year. Who knows....

We gave up our 3rd round pick and got back the 49er's 4th rounder and Trent in return. So not too bad. The only problem is that Trent Brown is a right tackle by trade. Are we planning to kick Cannon over to left tackle?

One year of Mason for $2M + 4th/5th 2019 > 3rd round 2018 pick.

I disagree. You have a 1dt round oick sitting the bench if you keep Mason. If we had no replacement, I would agree.

Wynn in the lineup plus a 3rd round defender for depth (not just help this year but getting primed for a bigger role next year) is better than Mason playing and Wynn sitting the bench.

I understand the idea of depth inside and understand a rookie may not perform. But I don't think wasting a year of a 1st rounder that's pro ready and getting a 4th round comp pick in 2 years is a better solution. It's a trade off of depth at OG for depth on defense, and if rather we get the defensive help now.

Something crazy is going on. One things certain, there’s no way Wynn is playing left tackle. Not this year, probably not any year

The quote is usually attributed to Freud, but its origin is uncertain.

Really? I thought it was Jung.

Or Teddy Roosevelt.

The quote is apocryphal of Freud, representative of the reasoning of Jung and dissembling from Clinton. TR would simply have enjoyed the cigar while 'liberating' the country of origin to ensure a continuous supply.

Practical motherjeter that TR

I’ll hazard an explanation. B.B. is crazy is why.. I mean we need defense bad and what’s he do? Drafts a position we already have five of lmao. I’m not criticizing really but you have to laugh at this stuff. Craziest thing is, it’s probably going to work out good
Yeah, I'm glad you know how to run the Pats better than BB. Thanks for dropping in. Now, feel free to drop out.

I thought it was a 5th??

I would prefer to think of you as a plucky 6th round draft pick with a chip on your shoulder, who walks up confidently to me and says, "I'm the best decision your organization has ever made."

My cousin thanks you, but what am I, an undrafted free agent then

Wynn is likely Mason’s replacement when he rides off into the sunset.
Wynn should be in the starting lineup though - somewhere... David Andrews wasn't particularly great last season. Maybe someone takes over Center?

Yeah, it sucks, the draft is over and we didn't draft a single LB.

I know and no defensive players in the entire draft. Oh well there's always next year. Its a good thing we traded for a quarterback and picked up Trent Brown! I love it when he pulls to his left and throws the ball downfield on the run.

I really doubt they'd get a third round comp pick for him.

You're right, it's a 5th. My bad. I thought it was a 4th.

I hope they get a couple of 4th's before the nights over they have done Traditionally well in that Round.

He's far from perfect but i hope it works out. Maybe they start to focus their attention on the defense now.

One year of Mason for $2M + 4th/5th 2019 > 3rd round 2018 pick.

Yes that is correct but it honestly depends on the situation too. Wynn+Andrews+Thuney+3rd round pick > Mason+Andrews+Thuney w/ Wynn on the bench.

If the plan is to put Thuney on the bench then okay but he is more than a backup to me. I would rather get max value now for Mason personally. I like the player but they are in a position not to need him and will lose him anyway next year.

Just to be clear I'd love to have great depth at every spot. However right now my main concern would be to put sure we have good starters everywhere or at least a chance to have that.

I am not sold on McCourty as a Butler replacement nor do I love going into next year without a real solid 3rd LB option and I certainly think the DL needs more pass rush. Not to mention it be nice to grab a QB just to take a chance.

I understand trading away Mason makes them thin on the OL potentially but at least they would be thin with 5 proven starters who preformed well last year. More than i can say for other spots on our team.
