Agreed as we all know... the defense in '22&23 were more than good enough. I truly believe Vrabel was rooting for Dugger and understanding that he's been a good player in the league. That injury has just impacted him. Hopefully he can do well in Pittsburgh.Yes, in '23 Dugger was great. I hope he fully recovers from his ankle surgery. I wish Dugger, Peppers, and other former players, all the best. The NFL is a tough business for a young kid.
Glad to see him making plays. Unfortunate with how the ankle injury went and then the scheme/regime change but happy he found a better fit to try and revive his career. He's doin' alrite:

The bottom line is still that Vrabel concluded that Pettus and Saunders were both more valuable than Dugger as our backup safety.Dugger (and Peppers) when healthy is still a very good player, he's just less of a system fit here where Vrabel prefers two oversized free safeties. Just because a player is gone, it isn't necessarily because they're bad.
Pettus, Saunders and even Hawkins are solid rotational safeties. None of them are leading this team in solo tackles every season the way Dugger did.The bottom line is still that Vrabel concluded that Pettus and Saunders were both more valuable than Dugger as our backup safety.
As long as both Woodson and Hawkins can play 100% of the reps (or very close to than) throughout the playoffs, then it doesn't matter. Pettus would only be a liability for a short time with that liability balanced by his ST play.
Of course, Saunders has come and gone.

Obviously, Vrabel could believe that he has a better backup than Pettus in Woods or Austin, but I believe that it has been Pettus who has gotten the reps.
the Pats paid Duggers salary and bonuses for the entire season, even though they traded himPettus, Saunders and even Hawkins are solid rotational safeties. None of them are leading this team in solo tackles every season the way Dugger did.
Bottom line is there were questions about money, system fit and age. Vrabel didn’t just rid of Dugger, he got rid of Peppers also. Both are true strong safeties… the rest have a little more range in coverage as free safeties… they also cost about a 1/4 of Dugger or Peppers.
Dugger and Peppers are better players than any of these guys are or ever will be, but they’re also at or past the 30 cliff. Time to move forward.
He signed a 4 year extension last season. If I don’t have to pay you next season or going forward I’ve saved money. If traded instead of cut outright returns two late round draft picks I’ve saved money.the Pats paid Duggers salary and bonuses for the entire season, even though they traded him
so the financial aspect is off the table
in this defense Spillane, Gibbens, Ellis are leading the team in tackles, as the S

Regardless of incoming contact and needing to get it out, what in the blue hell did Flacco see there lol. He's doin' alrite:

Old Joe doesn't like to get hit so he said F it.Regardless of incoming contact and needing to get it out, what in the blue hell did Flacco see there lol.
One 7th round pick value is more than they would have gotten had they cut him outright. They got one late-round pick for another later-round pick and Dugger
they also could have waited and moved him in the offseasonHe signed a 4 year extension last season. If I don’t have to pay you next season or going forward I’ve saved money. If traded instead of cut outright returns two late round draft picks I’ve saved money.
I didn’t say trading Dugger was purely financial, I gave a multitude of reasons including scheme, age and money. For all we know Dugger and his agent were making a stink about starting.they also could have waited and moved him in the offseason
they didn't. in fact, they traded him for nothing, and paid this years salary and game day bonuses to move him, after he played his highest snap counts all season.
to label the trade of Dugger a financial decision is a reach
Maybe so, but it's not two picks. One 7th round pick value is more than they would have gotten had they cut him outright.
No, I misspoke on the return.Maybe so, but it's not two picks.
but thats not the pointI didn’t say trading Dugger was purely financial, I gave a multitude of reasons including scheme, age and money. For all we know Dugger and his agent were making a stink about starting.
You’re never going to get a lot in return for an aging DB coming off injury with a massive price tag. The same thing happened when they moved Gilmore… the free market dictates return…. not the fickle opinions of fans.
if they think he sucks, when Hawkins was injured, the week before the trade deadline?? did "they" play Dugger 100% of the teams defensive snaps and not Pettus?Because they think he is worth less than a draft pick to the team. In other words they think he sucks. Why is this so hard for you to understand?
