Player Signing Patriots sign WR Mack Hollins

Not too exciting at first.
But, if you watch how he's typically used, and what he can still do last year with the Bills. He could fit as a good piece:

Instinct for finding the hole in zone, good ability to flex on broken plays, very long RZ target, good hands in weather, quite shifty and fast enough for a big WR. I think he'll steal snaps from Bourne & Polk - so they're on notice.

But no one is saying this is THE FIX for our WR room. We still need a #1

Don't just look at WR position overall. Look at at more specifically. There are X receivers, Z receivers and slots. Some guys overlap, but we don't have anyone who's a true X. Boutte played it last year but he should be a Z. Baker has some X receiver traits but also might be better as a Z. Polk/Bourne are Z/slot types. Pop is a pure slot.

Hollins is a true X receiver, even if only a depth option. Despite overall abundance of depth at the WR position in general, we had absolutely none for that specific positional alignment. Now we have one depth guy.
That is my main worry. He is the only real outside guy which by default may have him on the field way more than I would want unless they land a true X receiver.

Jack Bech - Jayden Higgins or Tre Harris have to be considered on Draft day.

Then why did we sign him? He's not here to be a #1.. he's here as a leader and culture building player. Vrabel has been super aggressive so far and as fan it's great to see. After the last few ****ty seasons I have optimism.
You should save your energy, some of these folks don't seem to understand that there are more factors that go into a signing than on field production.

I don't understand why some people are worked up about this signing. He's a one year place-holder that acts as insurance should we not be able to draft an X. At least for now, we have an X receiver who can be a downfield and RZ threat, that is a very good blocker and special teams expert. No he's not the answer, but he might provide some cover until we get the answer.

I do not get the love for Pickens, Metcalf or Higgins for this team. Please splain why?
Higgins I get, because he's the only one of that group who is simultaneously a) young and b) produced at a high level.

Metcalf scored a TD on us that one time, I'm guessing that's the love for him.
And Pickens was a draft binky for a few people a couple of years back, and they pretend like he's some superstar and not an actual crazy person.

You gotta be kidding me if Mack Hollins is our #1 the Room Sucks. Drake Maye is not Tom Brady who can make chicken salad out of chicken **** .
No depth signings allowed only starters, 53 starters is what we need. Do you hear how ridiculous that sounds?

All fair points, minus the hamstrings on Higgins I like him as well. Not at 30M a year though on top of picks to trade for him.

Ideally you want to draft and develop your own WRs.. however this has been a curse on the Patriots organization. Polk and baker I feel like Vrabel has saved them from bust road.. I feel like Vrabel and Josh can get them to be productive in the offense.

Kendrick Bourne will be 30 during camp. Players typically don't get hurt less frequently when they turn 30.

I was super surprised and pleased with Bourne's first year, and hoped he'd turn into something - but three full seasons after that, he's just not.
Like you I was encouraged by Bourne’s first year, and hoped for continued growth the next season.

Instead he was a victim of the Patricia/Judge fiasco, along with much of the rest of the team. I don’t fault him for saying the emperor had no clothes, nor for the consequences of his speaking truth to power.

Injury in ‘23 was bad luck. Hopefully he bounces back and shows some more improvement this year.

He’s running out of time, but let’s see what he does with the time he has left.

Calling him a bum seems overly harsh.

He's made 18 million over the last 3 years (After 2021). You've gotten 100 catches, 1145 yds and 6 touchdowns. In 3 seasons. An average of 33 catches, 382 yds and 2 TDs per season. Kayshon Boutte, playing for nothing, a 6th round pick, did better than that last year. Mack Hollins did better than that. These are not elite receivers.
