Patriots sign WR Jordan Matthews to a 1 Year Deal

Unfortunately, if he has an impactful season he will price himself out of our range and if he doesn't play well then there is not much reason to extend him anyway. Wish we had him on a 2 year deal.
There's in between scenarios too. Also possible comp pick if he has to good season.

It's not ideal long term, but you never know what could happen. At least fills a need right now without putting the future at risk (unless you think the Patriots were going to draft a WR early but no longer plan to because of Matthews, which I doubt).

Counting stats, great. He put up big numbers because he was basically the only option in a Chip Kelly offense that ran substantially more plays than any other team. A lot of those stats came during garbage time. He drops a lot of footballs and a very good coach dumped him for whatever he could get last year.

You know the old saying Prime "one man's trash is another man's treasure"...I think I remember a few years back when we played Philly and Chip Kelly in a weird loss. Matthews caught a Huge Third Down late to seal the win...garbage time?? I think not.

My head please don't say the Patriots and Draft a WR in the same sentence I can't take it.

I don’t buy the garbage time stuff. It’s just a way to trash a player without using real facts.

Any word on what Matthews contract is?

You don't seem to have a problem "buying" it as a way to talk up the Pats defense. Nor did you have a problem "buying" it as a way to trash Harrison...

He looked better than I expected but the 2 garbage time sacks were entirely meaningless.

Somewhat tangential perhaps ...

Patriots have gone that Route before on a few occasions Cameron Meredith is an intriguing prospect Big Boy. Wish we had paid a little more for Emmanuel Sanders many moons ago even I didn't think he was as good as he turned out. That said the Steelers have done very in the Drafting a WR department and have gotten good production early on unlike most Teams.

I don't think you are aware of what he did in Philly.

I think if you Google Philly fans' impressions of him, you'll find vast disappointment and cheering that he was traded. Their offense was certainly better after his departure. And he spent all of last year battling injuries.

He might turn out to be very good, in which case I'll be happy, but the expectations machine is ramping up again for a guy who's competing with cast-offs like Kenny Britt and Phillip Dorsett for a spot on the 53.

And suddenly we are to view Eagles fans as rational football oracles? That improvement was probably far more reflective of Pederson/Wentz being in their second year and the fact that for Matthews first 2 years there his QB's were The Butt Fumbler & Bradford the Bruised than the departure of a WR that averaged what he did while he was there.

Right, competing for the #4, 5, 6, and 7 WR spots (added Patterson, who I think makes it as a kick returner/gunner more than as a receiver).

Not a bad group of castoffs to put behind Edelman, Hogan, and Mitchell.

My initial thoughts: Edelman, Hogan, Matthews, Britt, and Patterson all stick. Mitchell starts on PUP or simply can't come back. I hope I'm wrong on Mitchell, and I've always had a soft spot for Dorsett, but I like the size of Matthews and Britt, and Patterson is occasionally a blast to watch.

But the opposite is true as well, that Matthews' counting stats were generally the result of being in a Chip Kelly offense that never stopped running pass plays and that much of it was compiled well after the game was in doubt.

For the record, Zak Cox has the Pats WR depth chart as thus:

Edelman
Hogan
Matthews
Mitchell (but leery about the knees)
Patterson
Dorsett
Britt
McCarron (and thinks Riley could beat out others to get on the team)
Hollister

Nice size on him at 6'3. Hope that he's a good route runner and can get on the same page as Brady quickly. Basically he is our replacement for Amendola. I expect him to run some tough routes going across the middle. He averaged 800+ yards per season in 3 years with the Eagles to start his career.

It would be semi-ironic if former Eagles Matthews helped fuel a Patriots comeback year. And yeah he stopped over in Buffalo, that's almost a requirement before coming to New England these days!

Philly fans are just like ours. Some know football. Most are lacking in knowledge. Only a Iggles fan would run a 75 catch/900 yd/ 8td WR out of town but embrace Vince Papale

What hype train? I've seen nothing but reasonable projections.
