Patriots sign ex-Colt DE/OLB John Simon

Simon has a long injury history, but is a notorious high effort / high motor guy and a two time OSU team captain. He is strong for his frame, was a weight room warrior. His speed wasn't bad at the combine, but keep in mind that was 5 or 6 years ago.

Hope he does something or else we will be using safeties at LB. Chung can do that in small doses, but I'm not sure he would hold up if asked to do it on anything but 3rd and long.

His Pro Day 3 cone was 7.1. That’s average for an OLB but above average for a DE. Of course that was then and this is now.

He's always been an analytics darling. I was shocked when the Colts cut him, thought he played well last season. He was great with the Texans in 2016, big piece of that top-ranked defense as a rotational guy.

He's a very good pass rusher and can play standing up and was generally stout against the run. Only problem is he doesn't have a natural position, a little undersized for a defensive end and a little big for a linebacker, a little like Derek Rivers. He's a rotational guy, not a starter, but he's been a useful piece everywhere he's been. I like the signing. Maybe he's Nink 2.0 for the Patriots.

Given all this, why wasn’t he on a roster?

That's some alternate reality there. They were at the 31, making it a 48 or 49 yard FG

I'd rather kick it than throw to Gaffney of all people, sure, but the FG was not automatic and it was apparent by then that scoring opportunities might be rather scarce that day.
What also sucked about that 4th down is that Welker was Wide Open on the other side of the field, to Brady's right.

I'm excited. Just from a fan standpoint.
I just like the idea of "something" being done to try to shore up the deficiencies.
Maybe create a little more competition.

It might not be accurate, but the D just looks slow and uninspired.

I've been curious, and looking for some Patsfans posters insight of some of the recent tryouts.

I'm happy to hear some positive comments on one … finally.
Much better than the usual snarky, sarcastic remarks.

Thank you to the poster who know this guy and like the signing.
If it works or not, makes me feel more positive.

Was he on the field for this?

Can’t say we aren’t trying, just wish we had 1 good to elite piece at DT or LB.

Can live with DE young guns and I like our secondary depth if we could actually rush the passer.

John Simon seems to be a nice player if used in the right role, and would appear to be, if healthy, at least better than Keionta Davis. That is a start.

I lurked on here for a few years before joining in 2008 and I genuinely miss the intelligent football conversations that were had on here win or loss. As the success of the team grew it brought more and more posters on here which brought on a decreased quality on here.

I don't think numbers is the issue, though that's just my take.

We've lost some great posters to various things (Box O'Rocks, Unoriginal to name a couple), had some formerly sane posters lose their minds, and had an influx of posters who do things like obsessively read the stats and break down the film, yet still fail to see the what and/or the why of what's happening. That's where the biggest loss has been, IMO. Beyond that, we've driven off pretty much all non-Patriots fans, when the board used to have some decent interaction with some of the fans of other teams. The board rules/modding has changed, and I think that's negatively impacted things. And time has made a lot of the long term posters a bit jaded about delving into every freakin' needless detail.

Again, just my take.

Doubt if Simon is some sort of "savior" that will turn the NEP doldrums around.. he is a cog in a very complex wheel. At best he will be some sort of spot player... he wasn't signed before this for a reason.

He looks pretty tough in Lazar’s clips. Pats Dline could use a bit more of that. Hope he doesn’t wind up on IR.
