Player Signing Patriots re-sign Trent Brown

Different topic but linked...

While $10m for a starting LT is reasonable, I don't think Wynn's play last year was consistent enough to warrant the cap space.

I still think it's possible he gets moved, they save cap space (might need to eat some) and Brown gets moved to LT

Here we go again..

Bloody brilliant. Has made this off-season a lot better already. If Trent can stay healthy he’s a top talent. Makes our o-line more solid. Now we only have to look into getting a new guard/tackle depending on what they do with Wynn

This is a good signing and with all the speculation coming from various posters about the various POSSIBLE OL configurations just emphasize how making blanket predictions about this team at THIS particular time is just ludicrous. We don't know how this team will look come September. The team building has only just started and has a LONG way to go.

I know fans might become depressed seeing various AFC rivals loading up on name brand talent while WE seem to be picking from the bargain shelf. I get that and I feel it too....to some degree. But I want to remind Pats fans that it was about this time in 2001 that the very knowledgeable owner of Profootball Weekly ( I forgot his name) wrote an article about which NFL teams were LEAST likely to get to a superbowl in the next 5 years Number one on that list was the New England Patriots. Obviously about 9 months later that column became as famous for its absolute WRONGNESS as the 1948 Headline claiming Thomas Dewey winning the presidential election over Harry Truman. (Sorry I taught history for close to 20 years and as you know I have very poor impulse control ))

Like I have said in previous posts, I believe we are on the 2nd year of a 3 year rebuild. I believe when all is said and done, we will field a very competitive team next season. A team capable of winning any game they play. Unfortunately they will also be capable of losing any game. That's the nature of a rebuildI.

If you read Bedards article on what the Pats can STILL do this off season, you will see a list of many possible FA signings that would improve the team. Trent Brown was one of them. We shall see.

Not necessarily.

Plenty of Year 1 starters at G are available later in the draft or via FA
100% agree. I'm leaning BPA amongst DT (especially NT), CB, DE, and LB frankly with that 21st pick. Now if a franchise LT slides....we can have that discussion, but isnt the consensus there are few if any "everyone agrees" franchise LTs in this draft or more guys like Wynn...good/solid, but not possible All-pros?

Real glad to see TB resigned. love the combination of size and athleticism. Really hope he can stay healthy this year, that his training with the Patriots has him better prepared for the coming season.

Lots of folks saying we should spend high draft capital on CB, but haven’t we done very well with UDFA corners? It’s one of the areas that the Patriots seem to do best at evaluating and developing rookie talent.

Sneaky update Cousin.
How about J.C. Tretter former Browns CAP cut. Is center . Can play Guard. 6'4" 307 from Cornell. Smart. The Karras solution. Solid player. Upgrade for Karras actually. Good pass blocker. Overall PFF grade of at least 72 in each of the past four seasons. 78.7 last year. Great number here....... only 1.......sacks allowed. Only 5 penalties.

Or......my hunch, not that it means much? Wynn back to Guard and we keep looking for a LT. How many Pats Fans would be upset if Terron Armstrong was the only high profile FA we signed? I'm good with that.

I hope that youre right about moving Wynn from LT.

BTW do I think that the Patriots will actually do any of that I discussed above. Probably not.

All last offseason dejavu all over again But totally unsurprising.

This board never fails.
Board: Our OL is ****/full of holes, Bill sign someone!
Bill: signs RT.
Board: Great! Lets trade LT!
I’ve personally settled down on Wynn. He will never be the top shelf LT I once hoped he might be but he’s fine. He does mess up sometimes but generally he does his job acceptably. I am thinking the team may end up extending him for modest value. If he sticks around a couple more years then the line could be fairly consistent for several years as far as who’s on it - Wynn/Andrews/Onwenu/Brown will all have been on the line for 3 years at least and whoever plays LG will be the only shuffle.

Are the financials out yet?

Three benefits of what is expected to be a good deal for NE filling starting OT position w top quality:
> Top FA signing not counting against Compensatory picks (both 3rd (JC) and 6th (Karras) 2023 comp picks for NE still intact)
> Lower Cap hit due to plenty NLTBE options
> Continuity

+

Brown missing half of the season makes it again open season on NLTB incentives that will reduce his Cap # significantly in any case.

Happy that we resigned him. Just hope he stays healthy and we have some stability. Hopefully BB gets some help for Mac to protect him and hoping we can also get him some weapons at receiver.
