It means he wanted to throw AVP under the bus but doesn't have the balls to do it straight up.
If he’s smart, he throws AVP and Covington under the bus. That might be the only way he gets a second season. (Sadly, I don’t think that’s true.)

I felt from what I saw them do last offseason that this would be a "bridge year," bringing in a new offensive philosophy and relying on a strong defense to keep them competitive, but essentially not trying to win many games.

I was hopeful that Sow and Wallace would turn out to be solid contributors, leaving LT as the primary concern with the OL, that Polk would demonstrate why they thought him worthy of a top 40 pick, Douglas would become a real weapon for them, and that they'd be effective enough more often than not running the ball. Literally none of that has happened. I blame it more on poor coaching, but the talent level of this team on offense is quite a bit below average IMHO. Other than Drake Maye there is literally no one on their offensive roster who I would think is a "must keep." That is hot garbage and I'd show Wolf and Groh the door at the same time as the entire offensive staff.

The biggest indictment from my perspective, however, is the abject collapse on defense. This was Mayo's alleged strength, and we kept hearing how highly Covington was considered in coaching circles. We knew losing BB would have some effect, suspected losing SB as well would hurt, but Mayo and Covington I thought performed well in their roles last season (I credited Covington a lot for Barmore's high level of play last season). For me this is 90% coaching and on that basis none of those guys deserves to be kept.

Unfortunately, The Scatback has different priorities, and his fragile ego will prevent him from admitting he got conned by this clown of a HC. I do not share the hopefulness of some here that The Nebbish will step in and send Dad out to the shuffleboard court where he belongs.

I can't wait for my season ticket renewal letters next year!

If they want to win, they HAVE to fire Mayo. Go get Ben Johnson. Let him call the offensive plays as well. It’s time to move on. If they don’t care about winning, they will keep Mayo and his staff.
Ben Johnson, Joe Brady, Kellen Moore, Kliff Kingsbury, Mike Vrabel, Josh McDaniels.
Any highschool coach in the world, would be a huge upgrade.

Ben Johnson has all but said he is not going to be a head coach next year. I have been on the give mayo a chance wagon all year but I am starting to see why people need a change.

If Kraft fired Mayo, it would be a great sign that he won’t tolerate losing
It would also scream don't trust Kraft.

If he fires Mayo after 1 season then anybody is fair game.

Seems like Maye is going to have three offensive coordinators in 3 years.

-With Mayo throwing Van Pelt under the bus, Van Pelt will be fired next year.

(As an aside, I cannot imagine how bad our OC is going to be next year. Patriots had trouble finding interested OC candidates last year; who in their right mind is going to be interested in becoming OC next year when Mayo is inevitably fired at the end of next season)

-Mayo will be most likely be fired next year, and the new HC will want to bring in his own OC.

My goodness - Polk (Allstate) is making me do the impossible - miss T. Thornton! One target and 0 receptions! Not even good enough to warrant being a “One Catch Wonder” maybe One Target Wonder”!

You're right but this is why I don't believe winning is The Scatback's top priority, I think it is currently a distant second to the following:

Jerod Mayo knew he was coach in waiting for years, he knew Bill was getting fired by November so he doesn't get any OC/DC excuses from me he had plenty of time to plan who he would want on his staff.

The problem is his lack of experience. He wasn't coaching long enough, or at a high enough level, to form relationships with/knowledge of prospective assistants elsewhere in the league. That's why you have the likes of AVP (via Wolf) and Mayo's unqualified pal Covington running things.

There are two big questions that this team, and especially the Krafts, need to figure out. [I don't pretend to have the exact answers.]

1. What is best for Maye: making modest changes or cleaning house and possibly doing the same coordinator carousel that happened to Mac Jones?

2. Why does this team, especially the offense, keep stepping on their [redacted] on too many series? Obviously some of it is just pure lack of talent, but obviously a lot is also about awareness and discipline.

Phew, even though it would've cost me peanuts, I'm glad I didn't fly out to watch the game.

Living up to his scouting report.

The defense is worse than the offense despite having better players and a defensive HC.

So then don’t take the job. He doesn’t get a pass after the football we have been watching. That said, Kraft really screwed up.
