Patriots FA period assessment (so far)

Like What?
Having the Scatback get on his knees because he has fond memories of FLA?
Don't sleep on how much you can convince someone if you know what they want and how to get it in the area. Personality research is a thing.

He cares about investment? Set him up in a prime location for networking or prime neighbourhood

He is a party man? Show him your "security" system, how to get in and off places without media hassle

He wants leadership? Promise him captaincy

etc etc

I'm happy so far, in fact very happy. Hit up a tackle in the draft, and grab a couple of WRs and have the compete in camp with Boutte, Baker, and Polk. No need to bring out a veteran who really can't play anymore just to do so.

We have by far the worst WR group in the NFL. Ohio State was better last year. Grabbing guys to compete with Larry, moe and curly isn’t gonna get it done.

Oh STFU, get REAL. I'M sick of your crap. Another idiot I have to mute, you're a fkn idiot.

Not a fan of the approach as I think offense should have taken precedence as the #1 goal should be helping Maye. That being said there really hasn't been a signing I've disliked to this point, though some missed opportunities have happened.

Amd as much as I think this team should have been more focused on signing offensive difference makers. One thing I have to give credit to is how this D has been dealt with. Not only the kinds of deals they got, but the players they targeted and how it all fits well together. It isn't just a collection of talent, it meant to work a certain way and has been well thought out.

Assuming Barmore comes back healthy I think a lot of people are sleeping on this defense and how good it can be. I went over it recently, and in the modern NFL it plays really well. Maybe the eagles run us over or Baltimore feeds us out lunch, but outside of a few bad match ups I like it. And I'm not worried about a few high end teams counting us this year. We can fix those issues next year on D. This year is just about hopefully getting Maye 1 playoff game and this team some playoff experience as a whole.

I've been less active of late, but popping in here and there. Looks like we're not burning cash this FA period either.
Perhaps "burning" means wasting. We are certainly spending lots of cap money, with more spending to come.

1) We are spending more than any other team (in terms of total contract money and amount guaranteed.

2) We've signed 2 of the top 25 players for $14.5, $18M and $26M AAV plus Landry at $14.5 and Spillane at $11.M AAV.

3) We have made many, many decisions regarding letting players go and in signing other free agents.

4) The team is likely stronger talentwise at almost every position, obviously not including LT, WR, RB and TE.

5) We are 3 weeks into the free agency period with 5 months to go (plus the draft). Many more players will be added. Many positions remain to be upgraded.
==========
BTW, our 2026 effective cap space is already down to $35M. With a top WR signing and a few lesser signings it will be reduce to very little. Yes, the cap will go up for everyone. I do expect us to carry forward $35M or so. My point is that huge largess of excess cap money will largely be gone by the end of the season, with us being having a middle of the road amount available in 2026.

Our great 2026 advantage is that we will have no expensive players even potentially reaching free agency, only Bentley being over $5M.

Wow, I missed a lot. Thanks!

One or more of Onwenu, dugger and barmore will probably be cut or traded opening up cap space in 2026. I honestly don't expect barmore to play a snap again for pats.

I'm wondering if he even comes back at all.

We could see Barmore news within the next week. $6M of his $18M signing bonus was deferred to April 1, and while it’s guaranteed for cap, skill, and injury, it is not guaranteed for non-football illness.
