Patriots cut safety Brandon Meriweather(merged jumbo thread)

They say Meriweather's release was a "numbers thing".....Numbers of tackles he missed, that is.

"Let him walk" seems a bit strong given that he was a free agent and signed a pretty good contract -- and who knows whether he even wanted to stay.

True. I'll say it differently.

They should have offered him a 2 year deal as it seemed that they had a sense that BW was not long for this world.

But clearly they, for whatever reason did not want Page enough to make a better attempt to keep him from being a FA.

Now he is playing for essentially the vet minimum in Philly.

I thought he signed a one year minimum contract?

Huh...I had $1.5 mil floating around in my head, but now I can't find any details on his deal at all. Maybe I'm imagining things!

add to that bad angles on ball carriers and passing routes, blown assignments, # illegal hits, misnamed global landmarks, etc...

I don't see either of the Sanders/Meriweather cuts as a surprise.

What I do see as a surprise is that the Pats did nothing to address the saftey position in the off-season despite clearly being unhappy with 2 of their 3 top guys at the position.

Neither does comparing Seymour and Meriweather, completely different class of players.

Read my post. I didn't make any claim about class of players. I noted a late move that didn't work out in rebuttal to one that did.

Who's this year's Eugene Wilson (supercharged, because Chung is no Harrison)?

Also, he move Seymour, and that was a huge bust in terms of finding a replacement and helping the team that year. Looking back to Milloy really doesn't apply here, at least as far as making a foolproof rebuttal.
The Wilson comparison would clearly be Dowling. Its almost eery.

Wow. It looks like the Patriots actually are planning on playing 11 defensive linemen on the field.

Perhaps they addressed it by Barrett getting healthy and Dowling getting drafted?

Question, are we at 53?

Also a position that Dowling has never played before!I hope they dont move him to safety!Leave him at CB!

I'm still looking for answers why they just let Jarrod Page walk. I thought with the time that he had gotten, he was pretty decent.
I think if you look at the film of last years games it will help.

Chung may not be Rodney, but then again the
Big Bang Clock was never Lawyer Milloy

Well, if you read about the "0 big plays" for Milloy the year before he got cut, Meriweather would actually be ahead of him on that.

More to the point, though, is the issue of finding the next Eugene Wilson. After all, the first safety the Patriots tried in replacing Milloy (Harris) was a miserable failure.

He made some plays and he was decent for 15-20 snaps a game.

I don't need coaches tape to tell me that he'd be a good rotation guy in case BWs replacement is an epic fail.

I bet the GIANTS take him

he could be used in numerous Blitz packages and the G-men are thin at DB w/ many season ending injuries.

eff the Jets I hope he does not go to NYJ's w/ their collection of castoffs. Rex would use Merry in blitz packages as well

Too many teams have a claim ahead of the rats. If he makes it to them they will claim him for sure. The Rats, more than most teams, seem enamored with big names and former high draft picks. Being able to play is secondary to bragging rights.

No. I read 56 somewhere.

gotta figure Butler the other 2 will be tough to pick

we have 3 SS so is JIdagabogone? Barret won;t get cut will he?

last i'll pick Orhnberger
