Forgive my ignorance but is it possible they cut him then re-sign him to a new contract?

Not that I think it will happen, but could it?

It could happen, but there's really no reason to do that. Meriweather's not making that much ($1.65M) so there's not really any cap savings to doing that as opposed to just a normal extension. If you're thinking about him agreeing to play for less, I seriously doubt he would be willing to re-sign a one-year deal for less money than that.

No. Meriweather was drafted in 2007, Matthews in 2009.

One thing I am surprised about is that the Pats couldn't get something, anything, from somebody in a trade for him. I know teams are often hesitant to trade for a guy that is set to be a free agent the following year, but Meriweather's contract ($1.65M) was relatively team-friendly, even if it did turn out to be a one-year rental.

They didn't even try to trade him it seems. I think at the very least we could've traded our starting safety never mind we have no one better then him across from Chung.

I must have talked to 12 teams today and none of them had heard from the Patriots about Meriweather being available.

If true this is stupid.

Kind of shocked to hear NO pre-cutdown trades around the league this year.

I'd feel much more comfortable with this is the Patriots resigned Page. I thought he played well last season.

WOW.. I am shocked that BB has dumped both Meriweather and Sanders. Ihedigbo and Brown must have played stellar against the Giants to have made it so the Pats felt comfortable with them..

Pats now are truly in need of safety help unless Dowling has lit it up in camp without anyone knowing.. Or.. maybe Bodden is being tried back there..

I'm not as shocked as I was when he cut Lawyer Milloy just days before the start of the season.

I'm trying to remember how that worked out in the end.

I'm surprised, since they did cut Sanders. Then again, not shocked because he was always a missed tackle away from being cut. We all have to believe BB knows what he's doing. To post that this move was "dumb" is equivalent to stating that your smarter then Bill. I'm hearing that all the players hate their coach.

We'll see if you're still saying that when Chung goes down with an injury (when, not if) and they're picking up guys off the street to START. Meriweather is not all world, but at least he's been around and knew the system...sort of.

Knowing the system (Merriweather) does not mean FOLLOWING the system. Was very telling that Matt Patricia was assigned the safety group this year to try to get them in order. Matt and Bill must have not like what they saw (Sanders, McGowan and Sanders released). Merriweather is looking for the big hit and that is a Bozo no-no in the new No Fun League. While saddening that NEP couldn't get him on the 'same page' as Bill, I would rather have an average Safety who is where he is supposed to be, rather than a above average one who is not where he was assigned to be. As 4 years in the system means Merriweather damn well knows where he should be, looks like it is a motivational issue with the free-lancing. -or he is sleeping in the DB meeings.

Anyone know how the safety class of 2012 is looking?

Two thoughts:

I'm drawing a blank on his name, the coach that just took over as defensive backs coach this year ... must have seen something he really did not like with Sanders and Meriweather....

I'm trying to remember how that worked out in the end.

The difference between then and now is that the Pats had Rodney Harrison to take over for Millow and felt that Antwan Harris could take over for Tebucky Jones. And that didn't last a full game before Eugene Wilson was on the field as the starting Free-Safety.

This year, the Pats have Chung, who is NOT Rodney Harrison, Brown, Ihedigbo, and Antwaun Molden... They also have Ras-I Dowling who either is the best kept secret or hasn't played much at all.. Huge difference in situations.

Stronger than 2011, but still not great. Unless some Junior Safety really steps up and shines..

My guess is that BB knows of a veteran safety who is getting cut and that player is an upgrade over Merriweather. I have no inside info, tweets, etc., pure hunch.

Every once in a while there is a BB move that boggles the mind. Absolutely mystifies.

What on earth is going on -- cutting the starting safety who has played 64 games in 4 years, knows the system, is playing for 1.65 million (inexpensive).
What was the rush? Who is currently on the roster better than Merriweather. He may be an ass but he was a known quantity.

BB could have cut him before the opener -- and used the next 8 days to TRADE him. Some team desperate for a starting safety would have coughed up a 3rd rounder. Incidentally, for a coach who value VALUE -- he could have let Merriweather go next year as a free agent and received some compensation. As it is, BB got NOTHING back now nor wil he get anything next year.

All he did wa make Merriweather a FA one year earlier. No loss for the player but questionable move from the TEAM perspective.

Boggled. Mystified. And its even worse if the Pats did NOT even try to trade him. Just what was the hurry, Mr. Belichick?
