Patriots Player Departure Patriots are sending WR Kayshon Boutte to the Texans for safety Jaylen Reed and a draft pick

So essentially, they really like Reed and this was basically a player swap. It'll ultimately come down to what Boutte does this year vs. what Reed does for the next 3 years.

As far as the trade goes what happens with Boutte also depends upon whether Houston can re-sign him. If they get a 1 year rental and the Patriots end up keeping Reed and he produces the Patriots are the big winners, because he wasn't re-signing here.

The bullseye is on Doubs' back.
This is true for message board posters who want to extend Boutte and give him the money instead of moving on from Boutte.

I well understand that many posters like to compare players and deals to times long past.

I strongly prefer having Doubs and Reed instead of Boutte and the #4 safety that he will replace.

Maybe just Schooler's replacement... period? Maybe that's heresy to say, but I feel like Schooler commits more penalties than he contributes impact plays, and he doesn't give you anything on defense.
Reed started for the Texans at safety as a rookie in the playoffs and did well. He is not a Schooler equivalent. Schooler would never start at safety in the playoffs.

Playing gunner on special teams includes long distance running. Schooler is a 4.43 sec 40, Reed is a 4.48/4.49 sec 40. Slater ran a 4.3 40. Reed is not fast enough to be a great gunner.

Reed and Schooler are different players.

I wish Boutte could’ve stayed even if it meant he walked at the end of the season, as fortunate as we were with injuries last season, something tells me that won’t be the case this season. However anyone that thought the Pats weren’t going to trade him were in denial, after signing Doubs and everyone knew they would trade for Brown, Boutte didn’t want to be here.

I know some are extremely upset on the return we got for him. Can you tell us which teams were offering a 4th or 5th round pick for him? He’s been on the market for months.

That's a lot of big shaky ifs
Is it? I don’t really think so. Asking Reed to be a good depth piece (not even a starter) and for the receivers to play up to what we’re paying them for? Doesn’t seem crazy.

I wanted to keep him for an insurance policy and his rapport with Drake but knew he would be 4/5 on the depth chart. Yesterday I did Ian’s slider predict the yds for offense this year graph. I needed to keep Boutte out of the mix for there were not enough yds to go around with all our new additions. Ian was having the same problem. At that point I knew Boutte would not be here. His yds could easily go to Williams or Chism. He made some outstanding catches last year, but he was not going to see much field time this year.
We over value our own players. Obviously teams were not offering much for him. Never know what Reed can show this year and beyond. My guess is he sees more field time (including ST’s) than Boutte would have. We need depth and he definitely fills that hole. Question is what quality of depth does he fill. We will see

People here have short memories and want to justify everything the FO does even if it's questionable. I wonder how they felt after Boutte made that insane catch that sealed the game against the Texans. I remember reading lock Boutte up now or when we can: if we could turn back time. Reid better be a player and solid contributor.
People on here have selective memories. Some will trash everything the FO does no matter what it is. Others will justify and give the FO a pass no matter what they do.

It doesn’t matter what Reed does there will be those for whom it will never be good enough.

They could have taken Reed way before Texans at 187. If they truly wanted him.
I’m sure they want many more players than they can ever pick. Every year.

It is interesting to consider that Reed was drafted 187 overall, and Boutte also was drafted 187 overall.

For a moment I thought you were going weirdly political. But then it seems you're giving folks kudos for clear-eyed perspective ...

Google sez:
Progressive lens glasses are multifocal lenses with a smooth, invisible transition between different prescription powers to help you see clearly at near, intermediate, and distance ranges without multiple pairs of glasses.
Sounds like a good description of progressive politics doesn’t it?

KW had only 209yds his Rookie year 72 was on one play against Tampa. So he had 137 yards the rest of the way on 10 catches; yeah we gonna need way more than that this year.
OMG only 13.7 ypc.

How will we ever move the chains on that?

I may get stoned for this, but I don't like guys being comfortable carrying the "special teams baton" and making that their whole thing. I want players who use special teams hustle as a way to hold on as they still claw and fight for a role on offense or defense.
It’s as good a reason to get stoned as any.

A lot of this discussion reminds me of the time we let Jakobi Meyers go.
What, or who, did we get in return for Jakobi Meyers? Who else was on the roster then?

Teams didn't design coverages to target Boutte. If it was anyone they did that for, it was Diggs. And I don't think most defensive coordinators respected anyone on the Patriots offense enough to design coverages to take them out leaving other receivers open.

And Boutte's catch rate is similar to Hollins and Pop while Diggs caught a far higher percentage. And Diggs and Hollins got far more targets. Boutte caught 71.7% of his passes. Diggs caught 83.3%. Hollins caught 70.7%. Pop caught 67.4% (both Boutte and Pop were targeted 46 times with Boutte catching two more passes than Pop).

Williams or Boutte would be at best the #4 WR on this team if both were still here. Neither would be asked to draw coverage away from other receivers to make plays. Both would only be targeted a handful of time a game. Williams is fine as a #4 or #5 WR. You wouldn't be asking either Williams or Boutte to be the #1 or #2 receiving option on this team.

The only way any of what you say matters in this is if AJ Brown goes down for an extended period of time and either Boutte or Williams were asked to step into a starting role for 3-4 games or more.
There was a safety overcome to on Bouttes side a lot. Like I said watch the games.
Diggs ADOT was 8.7, Douglas 10.4, Hollins 13.3 and Boutte 17.6.
Over 30% of Bouttes targets were 20+ yards and he caught 72% of them. That is insane. 72% of his targets were 10+.
You can’t compare catch rate without including depth of throw.
You inadvertently make a strong pro Boutte argument here.

Boutte should be one of the 3 starters. And he would run the majority of his routes deep like he did last year drawing coverage and opening up the field for Brown and Doubs. If Douglas is asked to play starter snaps coverage will be tighter on Brien and Doubs it’s going to be a repeat of last year where a few games in they bench him because he just doesn’t get it. Hes not a different player than he was in January.

When I first saw they got a 7th I was bummed about it. However, when I gave it more thought I realized that they weren't looking for a draft pick, they were looking for a young player they had like in a previous draft and couldn't get, and Wolf's press conference confirmed that. And when you look at it that makes more sense as he's already proven he can stick on a strong defensive roster. I think the Patriotscwill end up being the winners in this trade when it is completely played out.
