I don't really see Tavai as a great player or athlete... Feels more like a system guy.

He did put up 110 tackles last season but I don't get the feel he is a prototypical modern linebacker.

I'm guessing they did a 3 year deal to stretch out the bonus money.
Ninko on Tavai...

From Reiss ”Tavai played 74% of the Patriots' defensive snaps last season and 78% of the special teams snaps. He is the only NFL player in the past decade to play at least 70% of his team's special teams snaps and at least 70% of his team's snaps on offense or defense in a season."

His deal is a bargain for his role.

There really isn't much to debate. Everything else is complaining about the past or complaining about what could have been done elsewhere and this does not prevent any of it.
I like Tavai.. he got better as a player and carved out a great role for himself . Guys got excellent instincts, he hits like Brandon spikes..and can cover backs out the backfield... he's a true definition of a Patriots player. Guys need playing Time in the NFL.. he's earned it. He'd an important part to the defense..

Tavai….can cover backs out the backfield
He can? Maybe slow, broken down ones.

Miami will continue to convert easily on third down putting speed against lumbering Tavai and Bentley when they play the Patriots. For example, Jaylen Wright, the Dolphins rookie stud RB from Tennessee I was so high on, running a wheel route against Tavai? It’ll look easy. Chunk yards.

David Bakhtiari/Curtis Samuel.

Cap straightened Bills were somehow able to sign Samuel, whom I expect to see perform very well. Dude has size and elite suddenness. Alpha dog.

He is ranked third in the league, ahead of even Tyreek Hill, for averaging 9.08 mph after his first second in his route.
Bakhtiari hasn’t been the same player since his 2020 injury. He’s played in 13 games total over the past 3 seasons. He’s still a free agent for a reason.

In what world is Samuels a WR1? He hasn’t even sniffed a 1000 yard season in his 7 years in the league. He’s a WR3, and we have more than enough of those.

Agree here, if they want to sign a fossil, Donovan Smith might be the best option.

the Pats were quick and decisive on signing Okorafor. good or bad, I do see them allowing him at LT to play out well into August before they panic/make a move.
we also have no idea what Anderson is this season coming off a missed season. I of course do not expect him to be a stud, but he had been always in shape, ready when called on, and performed at an acceptable level prior to coming to the Pats. I would not yet count him out

Why?? I thought the emphasis was taken off ST's. That seems like a little much for $3 Mill dollar player Tops.
Not at all primarily a special teams player. Tavai is an interesting extension. He was around the ball a lot and was #2 in tackles in 2023, so they must see him as a core guy who can provide stability. I trust Jerod Mayo to know who wants on his defense.

A minimum-wager could perform in similar fashion to the Jalopy. Waste of ****ing money.

This is a signing of which Little Billy Notgoat himself would approve, and for which he would've been Justifiably lambasted.

Never seen so many re-signings/extensions from a 4-13 team.

Keeping dudes whom the HC "likes": Meet the New boss...
The defense functioned as a very good unit in 2023 that was unfairly burdened by an offense that could not sustain drives nor score points. Keeping that defense intact while the offense finds its footing over the next two years is essential. Upheaval on defense to save a few bucks as the salary cap continues to grow is not what any of us want to see. The main guy to watch right now is Judon and what kind of money he commands. They may not do his deal because of his age and the fact that the defense was fine without him.

The defense is already looking as good or better than 2023. Jerod Mayo is saying that Tavai is a durable, key player in that group. We have no reason to doubt his ability to make these kinds of decisions at a mid-range salary that does not blow up the cap.

Just for our knowledge - please name a minimum wage LB who finished #2 in tackles on his team last season. The top three Patriots tacklers in 2023, in order, were Bentley, Tavai and Dugger. That stat alone says that they were in the right place at the right time for this defense.

No he can't.

Knowing one's role and having the ability to execute it are two different matters. Mayo himself couldn't cover the Wheel route either, at all.
There no shame in that capn.. look how many great LBs we beat using wheel routes with brady... that is a tough route to cover

No he can't.
Well capn.. I think Tavai is a great player and still getting better.. he plays all 3 downs excellent sideline to sideline.. great tackler and hits like Brandon spikes... after speaking with coach Mayo we felt extending him was the right thing to do..

Ok. So name another LB you'd rather have on the roster playing next to Bentley.. Miami has 2 speed demons on the outside they convert 3rd down on EVERYONE... covering backs out the backfield meaning toss sweeps.. no LB in the league can cover a wheel route.. it's called a wheel route for a reason..

Bakhtiari has missed 42 games over the past 4 seasons. That is worse than Tyron Smith, which I didn't think was possible.

What makes you think that he's going to be healthy after only playing in 1 game last season

As for Samuel, what makes you think the guy can be anything more than a #2/#3 receiver? He averages 3-4 drops/yr, 3-4 receiving TDs and 1-2 Rushing TDs. What makes you think he's better than what the Patriots have out there? Samuel has only broken 700 yards once in his career. And that was 4 years ago during COVID.
