OT: The Rex era might be ending a lot sooner than we thought

Marvin Lewis should be fired because of the whole no playoff victories etc, but he is a good coach. I view him pretty much the same way as I do Jack Del Rio. Look at the Jaguars since Jack left. They are never going to be elite but with them there is some semblance of hope. Teams with a long history of losing should really look into these kind of coaches.

I see your point - they have extensions in NE, Seattle, etc. Maybe you could say Cowher could be interested, but it seemed the Giants was the team he would wait for, yet that didn't happen.

Cowher is not coming back.

I was reading some Buffalo news and it is the consensus that Rex is done, the speculation that the ax might fall today is because they don't want to see the embarrassment of losing next week, at home to Cleveland! They would rather put in Cardale have an interim coach and give them a winnable game, or at the very least, a plausible excuse (sudden turnover) for losing to the Browns. They have to come up with something, to get people to come to this game.

Rex is still owed 16+ million by the Bills, so don't feel too bad for him, at least he will be able to keep himself fed and hip deep in foot porn.

Any decent team like the Bills or Bears that gets Romo (not Cutler) becomes an immediate playoff team. But if the Broncos, a team that won last year with a terrible QB and still have a shot this year with an even worse one, acquired Romo, they're the immediate favorite to win the AFC. Send him to Chicago, if possible.

Consecutive 8-8 seasons is pretty good for the Bills. These are the salad days for Bills fans.

as a bills fan.... watching rex leave earlier than expected is a plus.
as a bills fan.... 17 years is a long time.

there's plenty of pats fans who have no recollection or ability to recall the 90's... that and the epic tailgating and fan base are few of the fond memories.

honestly, Doug Whaley couldn't find a quarterback in a college uniform if that was his job.... wait a second.

Russ Brandon needs an ultimatum.... you stay out of the football operations and market the operation or you're fired, period.

it sucks being a bills fan, it sucked being a pats fan for a while too.

If and when he goes I'll miss his pressers after a loss and his overall buffoonery.

Rex's teams have always underperformed their talent level. Plus there's a decided tendency for his teams to get worse each year under his leadership--if you can call it that. He inherited a playoff caliber Jets team and eventually turned them into a 4-10 stinker.

I think back to the firing of Greg Roman earlier this season, their offensive coordinator. I know general consensus on this board was that Roman was the scapegoat for bigger problems. In retrospect, Greg Roman is probably glad he got out of there when he did.

But the media love Rexy and his clown act. He's the ultimate anti-Belichick.

I think he will get fired if they lose again but they may just wait until the season is over

I agree. Another sign of a bad coach is so many penalties. I remember with the Jets he was asked about it and said something like that's what happens when your players are aggressive. Well, that's also what happens when your players have poor technique and are undisciplined. And don't get me started on his lack of clock management. But yeah, every time I see him, I know it's time for the clown show. It's Howdy Doody Time!

I live near Buffalo and personally I would give him one more year. But that said I can see them dropping the axe the owner sort of said playoff or bust in the spring. If they win out 9-7 is really only one game away from a playoff birth(thats a few bounces of the ball). Do you want to blow it all up or give it one more shot with a Vet QB. I would lean toward the latter.

The thing is that is telling is not beating any teams with a winning record.

The Patriots are the best team in the AFC, Romo wouldn't change that.

They should move on. The guy openly and publicly quit on the division title at barely the halfway point of the season. What does that tell your team? He either needs to go to the college ranks (where he may actually do quite well) or go back to being a DC.

From 1976-1989 it was pretty darn good being a Pats fan. (with 81 being a terrible outlier year)

1990-1993, they were very bad, 2 horrendous years, 2 other crappy years. We never really had anything go like the Bills are going through unless you want to go back to like mid 60s to mid 70s, even then it was not as long as the Bills.

The one thing the Bills seem never have happen, which we have had a few of, are the spectacular bad seasons, like 1-15, 2-14. We have had a couple. Their typical years seem to at least be 6 to 8 wins. I think 9 is the most they have had since the 90s though.

Another sign of a bad coach is so many penalties.
And not just any penalties. PIs, holding, offsides could be charged up to smart aggressive play. But Rex's teams get a lot of PF, unsportsman penalties, particularly in tight situations where those penalties were often backbreakers. Even with the Ravens when he was DC and they had great defenses, I never worried in close games because I was confident that the Ravens D would commit a boneheaded PF at just the right time to do themselves in.

Edit: [forgot my last thought] His Ds were often good against middling to poor teams but lost their heads and discipline in tight situations against good teams. And, of course, as a head coach he's treated his offenses as forgotten step children.
