It's easy, and only takes a few moments. He made everybody else look stupid, but he was simply practical, methodical - and he didn't waste time. If a player showed up who might have promise, he picked up the phone. Considering the kid Cowens from Florida State, there was concern among scouts that he might be too short (6'9") to play center. And I don't know that Red ever saw him play in college. No problem. Bill Russell to the rescue: "I met him. I shook his hand, and looked him in the eyes. You'll be all right with him. This kid has that determination," was all he needed to say to Red. We drafted him and the rest is history.Red was a genius. His best move could have been bringing in Russell, or it could have been the trade that gave us Robert Parish and Kevin McHale, or it could have been the drafting of Bird as a junior, or it could have been the trade that gave us Len Bias, even if only momentarily.
Brady protesting too much about the jersey rule change. Dude is worried as hell.
What? His issue is it will make the game unsafe and a mess as guys won't able to identify who to block and cover.Brady protesting too much about the jersey rule change. Dude is worried as hell.

It's an obvious attempt to increase the effectiveness of mobile QBs vs. pocket QBs. The end result will be sloppier football. When has the quality of the product on the field ever mattered to executives?Brady protesting too much about the jersey rule change. Dude is worried as hell.

Yep. Many "Pats" fans have morphed into Colts/Jets fans from back in the day.Since Brady’s no longer on the Pats more than a few “fans” talk about him like he’s a fraud who was never that great.

Probably not a bad idea to draft a QB and let him learn under Brady for a couple of years.
My friend told me a story about Dave Cowens, my friend was a good bball player, tall kid, played college. He participated in a charity game with ex Celtics and Dave Cowens was one that played. My friend went over Cowens to get a rebound and he says to him, you're getting old Dave, Cowens says oh yeah, the rest of the game he abused the guy, knocking him on his ass and got every rebound, he looks to my friend and says, you still think I'm too old. He was a nut job on the court. He made everybody else look stupid, but he was simply practical, methodical - and he didn't waste time. The media declared with absolute certainty that there was no way to get Danny Ainge out of his Blue Jays contract. So the rest of the league was pissed (and I was thrilled) when Red drafted him anyway. You know the rest.
DJ was supposed to be a malcontent locker room cancer in Phoenix. And Rick Robey was supposed to be that great big man that Parish and McHale turned out to be.
The list goes on...Don Nelson was supposed to be washed up.
Now: Red was human. He screwed some things up. Like Belichick, he wasn't perfect!! Paul Silas. Paul Westphal.
Then again, maybe he just had a problem with guys named 'Paul'...
Joe Barry Carroll is the Drew Bledsoe the Celtics would have had if Kraft had bought the team from John Y. Brown and Red went through with defecting to the Knicks.
Len Bias was Red's magnum opus. I couldn't understand trading Gerald Henderson - at first.
Dave is one of the few people besides John Hannah you don't want to say something stupid to. Pissed mostly about Silas, he dropped out of the NBA the season after winning the title - and drove a cab in Boston. Takes his basketball as seriously as Bill Walton. My friend told me a story about Dave Cowens, my friend was a good bball player, tall kid, played college. This moron made the mistake of being a wiseass to Lawyer Milloy at Parentes in summer camp when he was negotiating his last contract. Fortunately I was able to retreat quickly and hide behind the crowd as he moved towards me or I would not be posting here today.Dave is one of the few people besides John Hannah you don't want to say something stupid to. Well, he retired the first time in camp, right, when those big 2 showed up in '80. He'd had a lot of injuries, playing with abandon.I don't think he quit after winning the title......he quit after the C's added McHale and Parish
