OT: NFL Ties

The tie last night obviously didn't help anyone in the picks contest, and I did modify it to where everyone got a win last night. I'm now trying to fix some things formula-wise across some things to deal with it since it's been a bit since two teams couldn't outscore the other.

I'm not a fan of ties. Does anyone else fall under the mindset that the league should make both teams attempt 2pt-style plays over and over until someone falters at the end of the OT period?

Honestly they should eliminate OT in the regular season, imo. If they're actually concerned with player safety that is.

Last time I looked at this the NFL averages ~1 OT game a week. So I would rather remove OT than remove ties.

Would remove all the discussion about which overtime rules are "fair". You want the win then win it in regulation.

All you have is that a 10-6-1 team trumps a 10-7 team for the playoffs. Would you rather go to the 5th tiebreaker instead?

That's a good point. They'd have to look carefully at all the data with the new kickoff to figure out how easy it would be. Kickers are also kicking longer these days for some reason.

They changed the balls I believe.

Sudden death. Play defense. If you lose to a FG and don't get the ball, too bad, should have won the game in regulation.

Here’s my modest proposal for overtime. It’s back to sudden death, and the transition from regulation to OT is like the transition from 1st quarter to 2nd quarter. The game state remains the same between quarters. So if at the end of regulation the Cowboys are at 2nd and 5 at their own 20 the overtime will start with the Cowboys at 2nd and 5 at their own 20.

There’s no more coin toss, so people can stop *****ing about luck and unfairness. And people will know the rule, and they can
manage the end of regulation accordingly. Maybe go for two rather than a tying extra point since they know they’d have to kick off to begin OT. Or aggressively go for a winning TD over a tying FG in the last seconds of regulation.

Short of that, a more minor tweak I’d make if you wanted to keep the current format is to replace the coin toss with a predictable rule. Home teams always begin OT. Or visiting teams. As long as it’s predictable. So much of the issue has been the feeling that the luck of a coin toss helped determine the outcome. Make it known who gets the ball and teams can manage end of regulation accordingly.

Ridiculous that this amazing aspect of OT was not only looked at as a negative for the NFL, but actually changed to accommodate the less successful.

We got to experience the peak - fundamentally speaking, the NFL will never be as good again, IMO.

10 minutes is dumb. It should be 15 but I doubt players will agree to that.

I'm in favor of going back to true sudden death. Win the coin flip, kick the FG, ballgame. Not "fair"? Win in regulation then.

The NFLPA is the weakest labor union in all the major sports. They will fold to the NFL owners like they always do. The NFL will do whatever they want seemingly.

I don't think college or CFL style overtime would work well in the NFL. Players are too good. I don't think I want to see games decided by 70-60 scores.

Many people see it as 'should have won the coin flip' tho.
