OT: Mike Vrabel named Titans coach

I thought they had to hire an offensive minded HC to try to prevent Mariota from becoming Mark Sanchez.

Seems wild to see a one year DC who coached the worst d in the league grab a HC job but, we all know he’s a smart guy and I hope he’s ready for the task.

There's plenty of precedent.

Who thinks they panicked and hired Vrabel because they expected McDaniels to take the job and he took Indianapolis instead.

Seems like a lot of teams in the league are desperately attempting to achieve parity - with the Pats - any way they can.

...interesting...throwing some shade at BOB?

Sounds like a defensive player/teammate cheering on another defensive player/teammate. It wouldn't just be BOB getting shade thrown at him, after all. It would also be Romeo.

good point

(will you please stop ignoring me......can you grant me absolution?)

Other, and much more likely, explanation:

McDaniels took the job with the better QB and a mentor/helper QB who can help with teaching the system, the better draft picks, more than $80m in cap space and an owner who's too busy snorting blow off hookers' asses to interfere with football operations.

In other words, as long as Luck is healthy, which is something he certainly would have looked into, McDaniels took the better job.

Clearly that was the assessment of McDaniels, otherwise he would have taken the TN job that on the surface seemed like a fit for him.

It's possible. Wilfork also played WITH Vrabel, so he's probably closest with him.

But Vince is usually pretty good with wording his Tweets, seemed a bit loose there.

Yeah, and that's why I don't get some of the commentary around here. The Patriots have made peace enough with the Colts that they've made multiple trades with them, and that McDaniels feels OK taking the HC job there. And he'll be getting the best available QB from all the teams that had coaching vacancies.

This would be interesting

New Titans’ HC Mike Vrabel’s offensive coordinator hire is significant, and....Ohio St. co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day is considering becoming the Titans’ OC, according to league sources.

Ryan Day played under Chip Kelly at New Hampshire, then began his coaching career under him at UNH. Kelly hired Day to be his QB coach in PHI, SF. Seems likely to bring back a lot more Oregon college scheme for Marcus Mariota, if hired.

Many here have said that Vrabel is too inexperienced for the Titans job. Maybe so, but this move shows that at least he has a bit of humility and "the right stuff" to him.

Grossly oversimplifying a bit, I would place coaches in three Tiers.
  1. The highest Tier are those coaches that adjust their system to their players, and the game plan to the players of their opponent every week. BB is alone in his ability to accomplish both to such a high level. .
  2. The middle Tier are those coaches that can at least adjust their system to the personnel. As offense examples, Andy Reid, Bob O'brien, and John DeFilippo (or whatever Eagles coach deserves the credit) took QB's that excelled in a spread type college system (Smith, Watson, and Wentz) and made a quasi-college type of offense to cater to the strengths of their QB, with great success.
  3. The lowest tier are those coaches that think they are such system (offense or defense) gurus that they arrogantly force that system on the team regardless of the strengths of the players. Their are many examples, including former Titans coach Mularkey.
By trying to hire an ex disciple of Chip Kelly like Ryan Day, it is encouraging that Vrabel at least "gets" that he needs to match his offensive system to Mariota to see what he has. That doesn't mean Vrabel will be successful, but at least he shows some promise.
