That's an idiotic statement. When I look at the standings and stats in November, they'll reflect what happened in September. Not a single game in August, however, will be reflected.
See my comment about the win-loss column. See also my comment about September NOT being the only month in which regular season games are played. Of course they keep regular season statistics and wins/losses determine who makes the playoffs. However, just because the preseason has no impact on playoff seeding DOES NOT mean that it is in some way not important. See my previous initial response to you, you know the one where you took only one sentence out of it and chose only to respond to it, and you'll see that the preseason actually has worlds of importance and goes a lot deeper than simply wins and losses, while still having an indirect impact on wins and losses.
When people talk about Andrew Luck's first game, they're going to be talking about Septmeber 9th, not August 11th. When people talk about his first TD pass, they'll be talking about the one that takes place September 9th (if he throws one in that game) and not the one he threw yesterday.
Again, you're only looking at the argument and saying since the records in the preseason don't count and the preseason statistics don't matter when discussing greatness and records and HOF numbers that the preseason has no importance. What happened last year when the offseason was cut short and everything was rushed? What was everyone saying when teams were sloppy and the product that the NFL put out at the beginning of last year looked like an unfinished product? If none of the things that happen before September matter, then why have minicamp? Why have training camp? Why have joint practices? Why have a preseason?
Another idiotic statement. The regular season determines who makes the playoffs. Nothing that happens in August will impact a darn thing once August is over.
Oh really? Go back and look at the sloppy play at the beginning of the season a year ago. Go back and look at some of the injuries that occurred and read the many debates about how a shorter offseason could directly be linked to those injuries. The insinuation that the offseason isn't important, which is what you seem to be saying when you say nothing before September matters, is the true idiotic statement.
This happens every single year. People talk all August long about the preseason and then once the first regular season game is played, it's like the preseason never happened.
Yes, because most "people" aren't athletes and have never been athletes and don't understand that it's the preseason and the offseason process as a whole that allows the players to go out in September and be ready for the grind. Without adequate preparation, the stuff that looks so easy to the armchair QB's wouldn't be as fluid, polished, or even watchable. Most people think these athletes just strap it up and do it. They don't understand the real work is behind the scenes.
I don't care what you believe. I haven't ready any of the Patriots-Saints or Jones threads. I've heard it discussed on the radio, but nothing beyond that.
Then why the ***** are you even on the board right now when most of the threads (if not all of them) are pertaining to the preseason in some way, shape or form? If what you're saying is true and should be taken seriously, then you wouldn't be engaged in this conversation with me because you wouldn't be here in the first place. You'd wait until September and then you'd come to the board to read and respond to things. It makes no sense for you to be here at a time when you claim nothing about what's going on right now matters in the grand scheme of things. You should be watching baseball or any other sport where the games are being played "for real," not on a board for a sport that, in your estimation, isn't doing anything substantive or worth anyone's time. I guess the 32 organizations, with their owners, coaches and staff, and their players just get bored at the same time every year and decide to sacrifice time and risk all kinds of physical and mental grind for no reason at all.
Buddy, this is about more than statistics and what shows up in the win-loss column. A lot more goes into making a championship team besides what happens in the regular season. What you're saying is since practices aren't recorded statistically and only what happens in games are that teams shouldn't practice. That's what it's equivalent to. Once you learn to look at sports as more than just statistics, you'll have a greater appreciation for what athletes really go through to just be good. Even the scrubs on a team will mop the floor with any layman.
