My basketball idol growing up. He was class personified and a very nice man. My parents spent some time with him when he was a rookie with the Cs.

Havlicek carried the team on his back in that bridge from the Russell era Celtics through the Dave Cowens teams, to just a couple years before Larry Bird arrived.

Belichick would have loved his versatility as being a superb player on both ends of the court who could excel at both forward and guard. Almost played in the NFL with the Browns.

Incredibly clutch.

Fellow Hall of Famer Bill Russell, who played alongside Mr. Havlicek for seven years before handing over the captaincy to him, simply said, “He is the best all-around player I ever saw.”

Mr. Havlicek’s eight championship rings were third behind Russell’s 11 and Sam Jones’s 10.

Wow--just met him last summer, my brother is his neighbor. Across the street--saw us wearing Boston gear one day and we got to talking. He was the picture of health.

Oh man, one of the heros of my youth. I adored the 60's Celtics, they even played an intra squad game at my high school back in the fall of 1962- I remember seeing Hondo- he was a rookie. RIP John, a super class act and a fabulous basketball player.

Don't expect too much but I hope the C's at least make it to the finals. Means nothing to Hondo now but I think it'd be a nice symbolic tribute. RIP

rip Hondo. I miss seeing him at Celtics games. I got hooked on Celtics basketball watching him play in the early 70s. he is the all-time leading scorer for the Celtics. that's saying something when you think of how many great players the Celtics have had. and he did it without the three-point line. 8 rings a hof. he could run and run and run for days. what an amazing career. god, bless his family.

One of the heroes of my youth. Hondo was famous for never showing fatigue. It was said he didn't sweat. I didn't think he could die. I'm bummed.
