OT: Jack Del Rio out in Jacksonville

That will be the problem in finding a replacement in JAX. The big guns won't want to land in that situation because of the financial/relocation uncertainty and the need to fill seats mentality that will seep into decisionmaking going forward. Gabbard is sunk cost with a new regime, too. About the only thing that would save them is a FA named Manning (with a couple of FA like Wayne and Saturday in tow) and a HC named Dungy... That one in a million shot alone might give the Colts second thoughts about cutting Manning in February...

Filed to ESPN: Jaguars employees were informed today that the team is being sold.

This is going to be interesting.

Finally, no idea why he was there so long.

Next up is Norv and Caldwell...

Del Rio was a terrific linebacker and LB coach, but was never a good head coach. I'm sure he'll catch on as an assistant somewhere soon.

$60m ought to cover it.

According to the terms of that extended lease, the Jaguars would need to demonstrate three consecutive years of financial losses in order to activate the "exit clause" required to move the team.

On top of that, they'd then owe the city of Jacksonville their remaining rent on the stadium—around $60 million—in addition to compensation for lost revenue from taxes, parking, and other sources of income dependant on the Jaguars.

The eight years since that extension have seen a downward spiral in ticket sales, including the loss of 17,000 season ticket holders after the 2009 season, and the departure of Alltel as a naming-rights sponsor. Still, Weaver's recent efforts and investments to expand the local fan base suggest that his tune hasn't changed.

Schefter tweeted that the Jags would be staying put!
That is Weaver's intention, but then he's bailing out. Their lease is apparently a tough one to break, but those things have a way of working out. Breer thinks Shahid Kahn (the reported new owner who failed in his bid to land the Rams) will be open to building a fanbase in the UK and playing more games there... He emigrated from Pakistan at 16 and became a huge college as well as NFL fan. I believe there is a large Pakistani population in London that might help him build a following... To complicate the equation though Weaver gave his GM an extension. He's the guy who traded up for Gabbert... Some feel Del Rio benching Gabbert was the catylist to the firing today. And then there is some scuttlebut that Del Rio was coasting after his last big contract and not showing up until 9AM... He has a year left on the deal and they will have to pay him unless he catches on elsewhere. He has a face and the ego for networkTV...

Oh, sure.....

They're headin' to LA, baby!

Name stays, only the logo will have to change from an animal to a car (for a healthy naming rights fee). Talk about marketing synergy!

By the way - - j/k. The NFL would never allow a product name for a franchise.

apparently so....

New ownership

Of course, if you take his word for it. He is from pakistan via Illinois (I guess that is better than being from Kenya via Illinois) so he has no LA ties. No way he moves the team to Illinios, I'm pretty sure they already have a francise, so it looks like the Jags stay put, which is excellent news for me, as I'm gonig to the Pats Jags game next year!!!!!

LA had two teams and lost them! I don't know why everyone is clamoring to get back there. With the economy in California in the toilet, and the high tax rates, it really doesn't seem to be the place to go. LA is another migrant city like Atlanta/Tampa/Orlando, not many people actually from LA, they just live there (legally or illegally) which doesn't bode well for a fanbase.

"LA had two teams and lost them! I don't know why everyone is clamoring to get back there."

Response: Something called money

Response: And Jacksonville Florida has a healthy fanbase and no economic/housing foreclosure problems.

Well, the Browns could easily change the logo

Florida has no state income tax. Florida and Georgia are adding new residents everyday as people flee the tyranny of the North (Thanks for your House Seat Mass. loses US House seat, political clout). The Jags are trying to get a foothold in coastal Georgia, which is a growing and affleunt area (just as Ben Affleck, he lives there).

Question, instead of responding to him why not just restrict him to the political forum where it doesn't matter that he can't help himself...

Finding a replacement with a winning NFL record will be hard. Finding a replacement will not be.

Jacksonville is the perfect backwater for a "Patriots of the South":

Eric Manbooblia comes to mind immediately. He's tanned, he's rested and he knows how to lose and get fired with undying gratitude for having been given the opportunity. Charlie Weis won't even have to re-register his car or get a new driver's license. Josh McDaniels is perfect if the plan is to fully dismantle the franchise and make awkward draft choices. Romeo Crennel would love to get back to the East Coast although he looked comfortable on the KC sideline.

A bold move might be to hire Julian Edelman as HC/GM which we know he could do while returning punts, playing the dime back and wide receiver for the Patriots, and hitting on hot chicks in Jacksonville and Boston night clubs.

I wonder what the new name for the "Del Rio" sub at Angie's on Jax Beach is going to be...

Not shocked it has happened, just that it's in the season!

Losing franchises do stupid things like this. The interim Coach chosen from a small handful of assistants, is probably the most competent of the assistant coaches.

If the interim Coach unexpectedly wins a game or two, they then feel obligated to rehire him as Head Coach prolonging the mediocrity for another few years.

If he doesn't win, then they will lose him when the new regime comes in with a new broom. When he could have been a great additions to the new hopefully more competent regime, sought with a full and wide interview cycle, and provide a little continuity and insight to the newcomers.
