OT: Baker traded to Panthers

mayfield would just have been a locker room issue.
Mayfield gives them a QB for when Watson is suspended. Unless they intend on tanking

This has been 100% predictable the minute that the CLE deal for Watson was approved by the NFL.

Read our Watson thread...

Correct. Baker was gone as soon as that trade was completed. Anyone who thinks that this is an indication of how the Watson punishment will play out either hasn’t been paying attention or is a fool.

The Panthers and Browns have been talking about this deal for weeks.

Huh? One has nothing to do with the other. Baker was never going to take another snap for them.
If that was the case, they would've just kept him. That way they wouldn't have had to pay him anything and they'd be better off than the deal they got today.

The problem is that they know if he had to, he would have shown up. It would have been a huge distraction, but he wasn't going to just throw $19 million away to sit out.

Browns did the right thing. They already made their decision they didn't want him when they signed Watson.

It wasnt by his choice that he wasn’t going to play for them, it was the teams.

2018 - 5 QBs drafted in the 1st round

1 Mayfield
2 Darnold
3 Allen
4 Rosen
5 Jackson

Jackson is on the ropes if you ask me. He cannot continue his reckless style of play without suffering the ugly consequences.

Allen will win a Super Bowl
Mayfield pulled a Harry/Dwayne Robertson and shot up the boards when it was rumored the Pats were going to trade up for him. I liked Darnold a lot when he played at USC and thought he was a top QB prospect. But like Matt Leinart, for some reason they can't adapt to the pros. I don't think many people saw Allen becoming what he is now - a top QB in the NFL. I didn't like Rosen at all at UCLA. I agree with Jackson, he's already started a slow progression downward, but will still get paid a ton of money because he puts azzes in the seats.

Regarding Allen winning a Super Bowl, they need to upgrade their running game, supporting cast at WR and better on D.

Im not a big fan of mayfield, but he deserves another shot as a starter with being injured most of last year. this is a terrific deal for Carolina, if they get the 2020 mayfield its a steal and then can lock him up long term. If he sucks they barely gave up anything

I don't get why Mayfield agreed to give up $3.5m.
I assume he wants a long-term contract.

Basically

(1) Carolina will be committed to him succeeding.
(2) Carolina will be more likely to commit money to a high value contract if he has a good, but not great season
(3) Carolina isn't Cleveland
(4) Carolina isn't Cleveland in the year 2022

My comment was obviously unclear. I meant from a Browns perspective he was gone as soon as the Watson trade was consummated, not that he was going to refuse to suit up for them.

Not if Mac Jones has something to say about it!

When does Carolina give Mayfield a $230 million contract all guaranteed?

I'm kinda surprised that the Browns did this considering Watson's situation.. Rumors of 1yr+ for the suspension continue to swirl.
There was no way baker was going to play for them... If he got hurt they'd be on the hook for a lot of money... And next year when Watsons contract really kicks in, it's untenable under the cap

If Watson is gone for the season, Mayfileds best move would have been to man up and play for Cleveland to increase his stock price.

An imbecile would act like a baby and sit out thereby proving the Browns point that Mayfield is childlike. On June 28th Mayfield even stated that there has been no communication from the Browns and IF he were to play for them THIS season the Browns would have to contact him first.

Look here dolt Baker Mayfield has ‘moved on,’ doesn’t completely rule out playing for Browns

Fair statement.
