Detroit Lions clear out Brandon Pettigrew's locker, moving on from TE

Pettigrew was moved to the non-football injury list yesterday, which may mean the Lions are going to try to get off the hook for some of the money they owe him. He's got a cap hit of under $4M right now, $4.65 next year (non-guaranteed), and could be someone to help pick up the slack if he clears waivers or we put in a claim for him.

The downside is he's missed the entire season so far rehabbing an injury, although he returned to practice a few weeks ago. He's struggled the past few years. But he also posted seasons of 83 and 71 catches. If the Lions do follow through and cut him, he'd be worth putting a claim in for.

Doubt he would last to the Pats if he has anything left.

The Rats like "name" players and initial draft position, regardless of current performance, so they would likely claim him.

They could pair Pettigrew with Austin-Jenkins and convince themselves they are awesome at TE.

With 7 accrued seasons I don't think he would go through waivers. I think he would become a FA outright. Not sure about his situation though as I believe he was placed on non-football injury list a couple days ago. I do feel the desperation though. With Gronk gone, the position is teetering on Bennett, whose play has slipped in recent weeks as he has been hobbled with ankle and shoulder injuries. If he is absent or ineffective, Pats may have gone from having the best TEs in the league to having the worst. I think the offense will be challenged Monday night, especially in the red zone.

I'd be interested but the last thing we need is another injured, or somewhat injured, TE. I've been saying I would rather see what Matt Lengel can do and play Develin more at TE.

Devlin isn't a TE, if you are going to have him on the field, play him at his position.

In TC, one of the Ravens TEs said the Ravens had the best set of TEs in the NFL*, and we rightfully mocked him.

It's ironic that when we finally play the Ravens, with Gronk's injury, Bennett hobbled, Derby traded, and Harbor cut, they DO have better TEs.

Says here he would have to clear waivers. Former first rounder with ACL seems to fit.

After 2014-2015 no thanks looks like he has no speed or separation ability plus coming off a ACL I would like to what Matt Lengel can do first...I don't think he could be any worse than Pettigrew right now!

where is scott chandler when you need him?

anyone is better than having cam fleming lineup at TE. such a waste...

By Rats I thought you meant Ravens. It would also make sense, that way they can sign their 17th TE to their roster.

Just double-checked and apparently any player with 4 seasons accrued and is cut from the season start to the trading deadline is a free agent. However I couldn't find anything about AFTER the trade deadline. So I'm assuming the waiver comes back into play since Curran is reporting it.

As a blocker I'm all for it if he's healthy enough. Maybe a catch here & there (he's been known to have "stone hands")

Fleming is a terrific TE in the running game.

against stupid teams sure. against a good team like denver, having fleming on the field limits our offense/makes playcalling predictable. just stack the box, we all know he's isn't an option in the passing game.

He comes in in short yardage.

He absolutely has stone hands, and would make Scott Chandler look like Larry Fitzgerald by comparison. But he's still more of a threat to catch than Fleming. At the very least, the defense would have to pay attention to him as a potential pass catcher.

No thanks, draft a TE.

In the offseason, sure, but that doesn't really help us right now with the loss of Gronk. A banged-up Bennett and Matt Lengel(?) are our only options right now, unless you count OL Fleming.

He doesn't help them now, he sucks. I think they need to give Mitchell and Hogan a chance to beat teams vertically and allow White and Lewis to spread them out. I'm really interested to see how they adapt to the loss of Gronk against good defenses and I believe they have figured it out. It will be different but also just another example of why Brady is the GOAT.
