You’re right on the money IMO.
The problem isn’t at WR; it’s at tight end and fullback, with fullback being attributed to injuries. The Patriots are basically unable to mismatch personnel or disguise their run/pass with any effectiveness. Could this be solved at WR? Sort of...if you have such dominating receivers that the defense can’t stop your aerial attack anyway, but that’s very hard to do and usually gets shut down eventually. Antonio Brown would have helped a lot, though this is still trying to just be a better version of deficient offense. But now there’s such a heavy burden on the WRs that people are pointing fingers at the failures there. Personally I would like to see Harry and Meyers used in a handful of designed plays, especially inside the opponents 10 yard line, but outside of that they’re playing a very tough hand. I don’t know if they thought Gronk was coming back, but this has really put them in a really difficult situation on offense. There’s almost no versatility, the total opposite of last year.
I’d like to answer luukes post.
First of all, we have an ATG defense and special teams, and the only thing holding us back from number 7 is our atrocious offense.
What could we have drafted differently at WR? For one, draft better. NKeal had a lot of question marks coming out of college.
Here is one scouting report
“Team sources say that Harry is not real twitchy or explosive. They worry about how he is not fast in and out of breaks and don't see suddenness. Some sources said that Harry reminded them of Ole Miss wideout Laquon Treadwell, who is currently headed toward bust status for the Vikings. Some other sources say they are grading Harry on the second day of the 2019 NFL Draft and feel he is akin to Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Devin Funchess. One team source said they originally planned on grading Harry in Round 2, but were lowering him to the third round. “
I saw a lot of this yesterday. No separation, and no acceleration which means he’s not gonna catch balls in the open field and have YAC ability. There are other rookie WRs we passed up on who have shown elite separation ability which is what we could have used. Harry looks like a slow plodder, with good body control in red zone, but very poor hands.
Wasn’t John Brown a FA? Why didn’t we go after him? He’s not too expensive and is a big reason why Buffalo is 8-3
Mohammad Sanu for a second was a big overpay, but we had to do something to make up for Gordon’s abrupt decline, and the AB release. I’m a fan of Sanu as a slot guy, but he has zero ability downfield.
I agree TE is a huge issue and we dropped the ball. Need to invest high draft capital at that position. Sounds like we tried to trade for OJ Howard
