One thing a lot of folks mention is that Zappe only looks better than Mac at times because the OL is playing better - but I kinda question that. Is the OL actually pass-blocking better, or is Zappe just moving in the pocket much better than Mac was? I feel like I saw at least 4 plays today that would’ve been sure sacks for Mac, where Zappe instead at minimum threw the ball away, and at least once completely evaded the rush by stepping up or to the side and completing a pass.
One such play borderline gave me goosebumps because he had a rusher barreling down at him from the blind side that he absolutely could not see and he just effortlessly stepped forward at the perfect time, as if he has that QB “sixth sense” where he can feel the rushers without seeing them. I honestly couldn’t believe it and that was the moment that made me really put one foot on the Zappe hype train.
Yup, I know exactly the play you’re talking about, Garrett was coming in off the blind side and Zappe just calmly stepped up right at that moment without even seeing him and completed the pass a moment later. Thought the same thing.
I hate saying this because it’s not a Brady / Bledsoe situation, but it was amazing how the OL was terrible under Bledsoe and then immediately played well under Brady. Mac‘s problems are different than Bledsoe’s were, who just stood there like a statue; Mac just seems to get a bit jittery and moves in exactly the wrong direction. Doesn’t happen all the time, but enough that it’s noticeable. The OL has definitely improved, no doubt, but I think Zappe has been making them look a little better than they are, versus Mac who didn’t.
Yes, but how often did Brady make his oline look better with the right pocket movement and stepping away from pressure. Zappe has an element of that to his game

3-3 after your starting QB goes down is a great fest. Credit to everybody in the coaching staff and kudos to Fat Matt. I called him and Judge clowns, but so far they've been doing a great job.
Great win. Rest up Barmore and whomever else needs to heal. Should be able to beat da Bear at home without them. Gonna need them back for the Jete. Love this Zappe kid. He's won the job.
Mac has been poor this year so perhaps not fair to compare his worst performances with just two of Zappe but Zappe has a calmness to him that i think rubs off on the rest of the team whereas Mac is quite jumpy and the same thing happens. One proviso is that Zappe has done this against two pretty sub par defenses. I almost wish Mac was out for longer as i think Zappe deserves more time to prove if he can be the guy but i'm pretty sure Mac will start as soon as he is fit. One thing though if Mac starts to struggle Bill knows he has a viable credible alternative which you couldn't say before.
Need a much larger sample. I felt like Mac was the only one that came to play in Buffalo last year. He was really fiery in that game. So many variables.
If Mac has any hope of getting his job back he MUST not give off a sniff of entitlement. BB wants it to play out. He won't make a decision on QB until he needs to.
BB wants the competition. He is loving this. Hopefully Mac understand it's not personal, but strictly BBusiness.

Exactly. Patriots fans (myself included) spent years bemoaning the lack of protection Bledsoe was getting. It was the only thing holding us back.
No, Bledsoe's lack of pocket presence and statuesque style made his OL look worse than it was.
Some QB's make an OL better. Brady had it. Haven't seen it much from Mac. Zappe sure is showing signs of IT. Still early, but his pocket presence has looked a lot better than Mac's.

Zappe beats Det and the Browns and of course many reactionary fans think Zappe is a better QB than Jones.
Sure, he looks good with no pressure and open receivers, but most any QB would. Not to add playing with the lead, which helps immensely.
Your 2 big takeaways about rookies today is that any qb would be doing what Zappe is doing, and Thornton is frail. Turn that frown upside down buddy, plenty to be excited about.
