Before people run Mac out of town on a rail, I want them to think about the Chargers giving up on Drew Brees too quickly in favor of a pouter. Bailey ain't no pouter. I want to see this competition play out. I don't care if they're both on the roster for the next 3 years.
Play both their rookie deals almost alll the way out and don't part with either without a lot of draft capital in return. I love having both these guys on payroll so cheap.
Mac has been poor this year so perhaps not fair to compare his worst performances with just two of Zappe but Zappe has a calmness to him that i think rubs off on the rest of the team whereas Mac is quite jumpy and the same thing happens. One proviso is that Zappe has done this against two pretty sub par defenses. I almost wish Mac was out for longer as i think Zappe deserves more time to prove if he can be the guy but i'm pretty sure Mac will start as soon as he is fit. One thing though if Mac starts to struggle Bill knows he has a viable credible alternative which you couldn't say before.
For all the hype that he wasn't as athletic as Jones, I think that Zappe moves around in the pocket very well and has the speed to pick up yardage if needed.
One thing a lot of folks mention is that Zappe only looks better than Mac at times because the OL is playing better - but I kinda question that. Is the OL actually pass-blocking better, or is Zappe just moving in the pocket much better than Mac was? I feel like I saw at least 4 plays today that would’ve been sure sacks for Mac, where Zappe instead at minimum threw the ball away, and at least once completely evaded the rush by stepping up or to the side and completing a pass.
One such play borderline gave me goosebumps because he had a rusher barreling down at him from the blind side that he absolutely could not see and he just effortlessly stepped forward at the perfect time, as if he has that QB “sixth sense” where he can feel the rushers without seeing them. I honestly couldn’t believe it and that was the moment that made me really put one foot on the Zappe hype train.
Ya I don't get that, maybe the kid isn't gonna run for 40-50 yards a game but if that was Jones in there today, probably would have been 3-4 more sacks for the Browns, Zappe used his strength and athleticism to get out of a few pressures
on 1 escape he should have had a TD but Henry got pushed out and touched the ball. This was the play that actually has me now thinking maybe ride with Zappe for another week, let Jones get back to full health and then we'll see.

Zappe played well today, no doubt. His biggest differentiator so far vs Mac is ball security. At this point only Brian Hoyer has lost his job. Mac needs to play better when comes back or he will lose his job. That said Zappe is no sure thing. He had plenty of rookie moments, including bouncing a pass off the back of Andrew's helmet. Everyone was using a similar play from Thursday's game to make the case that Fields sucks. The real story is that the team is coming together, including the o-line and play calling. What a turnaround!

Mac is super jittery in the pocket. Zappe has much better movement and escapability. Also def seems stronger, saw him shrug off defenders that for sure have taken down Mac
