Yeah, sometimes. I mean, I think part of not generating pressure is wanting to contain him and not allow him to run too much.
We’ve run similar schemes against Mahomes that have actually worked. We drop 8 into coverage/spy, and though he has all day, it’s tough to find open receivers. We’ll see which approach they go with.
But Allen rolled right multiple times where he is most dangerous. They didn't contain him. It wasn't like they were keeping him in the pocket. Hell, he even ran for 64 yards and was the Bills' leading rusher for the game. The pass rush was just getting beat by the Bills' o-line that was depleted.
We need to copy the gameplay that indy put on him....seemed to confuse him a lot. We'll also need to be able to run the ball and keep it away from him.
but Pats have to start hot, if the Bills go down and score or keep the pats O off the board with a 3-and-out its again pressure on Mac, Pats have to switch this from the beginning so that Bills have to chase the score not the Pats
yep agree, but Bryant was beat instantly and basically chasing the Receiver through his route, it was never really a close battle, you might be right with the LBs being more involved in the crosser to get the receiver off their route helping bryant or whoever is covering the quick crossers on saturday
playing press coverage would also be a option do get the O out of sync and giving more time for the pass rush to get to Allen (as long as they can contain him in the pocket, if he is running wild than no coverage can keep up)
Yeah the reason he was beat instantly is because we play outside leverage man. You don’t even have to “win” on a crosser… you just run and you already have position. Unless the DB on you is faster than you or you get bracketed by a safety (like when we play the 1 cross coverage), you can be open.
Personally, I hope we try playing inside leverage.

guess it depends on the ability of the CB isn't it? if the crosser fakes inside and goes outside he is wide open when like in the case of Bryant/ McKenzie is way faster than the CB, the Pats seem to be scared of giving up a big play thus playing outside leverage?

That's correct. The idea of playing outside leverage is that with inside leverage, the receiver can release outside and create big plays easier- fades, double routes, etc. Not necessarily running a crosser and then breaking back outside. That would actually be a bit tough to do against inside leverage, as you'd first have to release inside. The Pats are definitely doing it in order to prevent big plays, which is a staple of their defensive philosophy anyways.
With outside leverage, you keep guys contained inside and break on the routes in front of you. However, I'm just not sure it's worth the tradeoff in this matchup.
Related to what you said, this is why you can almost guarantee the Bills will be playing inside leverage man against us. They sure did last time. They wanted to take away short/intermediate throws over the middle and make our offense beat them down the field and outside.
They played cover 2 man (allowing guys in man coverage to break on short routes) and cover 1 robber (having a SS over the middle to break on in-breaking routes)
I rarely complain about the Referees, but I am of the opinion that the Bills announcement of a signed, sealed and delivered new NFL stadium bodes factorable officiating in this post season.
Presently, Ralph Wilson is full of cheap seats catering to the beer and hot dog fan. The new place will be geared towards your corporates high rollers thereby fattening up the NFL coffers.
Lets face it, NFL officiating is suspect. Last Post season the Chiefs hit Allen and Mayfield in the head and no call. Sorensen went helmet to helmet at Rashad Higgins causing him to fumble out of the endzone. No call and KC ball. The Green Bay PI call last NFCC after the both sides DBs and WRs played physical all game long. Recently, the Bengals were holding KC receivers and no call. KC held Cincinnati receivers and the flag was thrown.
A call here and there places a finger on the scale.
great ball placement, great separation from the WRs as well and a hell lot of time without pressure for Allen in the pocket
keep him in the pocket and more pass rush through the middle, the LBs if they can't cover should blitz all day long, send the house on every other play, let him feel unsafe in the pocket
There's a huge difference between 25 degrees with no windchill, and 5 degrees with a "feels like" of -7, which is what they are calling for in this game. The body can recover pretty quickly in the first case, sitting on a heated bench and with a heavy blanket/drape. In the second, it just doesn't have time.
This is very likely to be a very conservative game, settled by how the ball bounces on a fumble or two.
We didn't get any pressure on Allen in game 2. Seemed to be playing a "contain" scheme, and it didn't work because with time he was able to carve us up. There's a risk in rushing Allen because he can escape, but I don't think we can risk letting him sit back there and pick our back-up secondary apart. I think we need more Uche in this game - he can work the edges and chase down Allen. KVN & Collins are both inconsistent and slow. I'd play a 2-4-5. Guy/Barmore/Godchaux/Wise combo | Uche - HT/Collins - Bentley - Judon/KVN | JC - DMC - Phillips - Ross/Dugger - Bryant.
JC has to have Diggs all game long. Bryant can take Sanders. Ross has to be in the slot on Beasley. Phillips/DMC need to bracket Knox.

Unfortunately, while I think this is well thought out, it highlights why we may have to play in zone and hope to just contain the offense for a lot of the game... I think leaving Ross on Beasley/Mckenzie and Bryant on Sanders, while also accounting for Allen's running ability, is just going to be a very tough strategy to live with.

The last game he rushed 12 times for 64 yards and rolled out to the right plenty of time. The Pats failed on containing Allen in that game. The Bills dominated at the line that game.
I think the Pats need to out scheme the Bills to get a rush. They are not going to overpower their o-line. They need to disguise their rushes by moving players around a bit and having disguised and delayed rushes. Whatever personnel they are best to do with that, I am down.
Could this year's Pats be the 2010 Jets where the Pats absolutely crushed them late in the season and then the Jets came into Foxboro as huge underdogs in the Wild Card round and blew out the Patriots?

This is one of those stats that shouldn't be too surprising. When you think about professional football teams, they're all (even the bad ones) filled with good football players who got where they are because they can learn how to compete better with more reps. So you see a team for a third time, and suddenly the general talent advantage is mitigated. Combine that with the fact that, since it's the playoffs, you'll still talking about two good teams, and it's not a shock that the lower seed would be highly competitive every time. Especially since it's the Wild Card weekend, which historically means even the higher seed isn't one of the two best (or now one best) teams in the conference. The fact that it's 5-1 is probably due to sample size a bit, but give it enough time and I bet it'll always be a coin flip in these situations.
Belichick did not rule Mills out, which would seem to indicate that he is vaccinated and has a chance to return without sitting out the full five days. Still not likely, but possible.
