james develin, 2012 ps, FB, 83 games, 31 starts, 2012-2019

They’ve gotta sign a QB right? If Brissett gets hurt then Maye is the guy, which I’m sure they can manage with, but if he gets hurt then you’re down to Milton who is still so raw. I’m sure they’d like to have another veteran layer on the PS just in case, one who has experience in the offense.

I think if they’re that far down the depth chart, there’s enough QB bodies that have cycled through recently that would be available like Grier or Book or whoever. Even Zappe is singable off of the practice squad right now.

You get to that situation, you’re definitely getting the #1 pick so it’s moot who’s behind center.

If Brissett and Maye are injured and out for the year, we might as well go for the #1 pick overall.

I’m not talking about out for the year, but maybe a few games.

Even if they were out for the year, you want some baseline competency to evaluate your other players.

You would have to think that part of the consideration for waiving Zappe and not, yet, signing a QB to the PS is a believe of the team that Maye is up to the “baseline competency “ needed. Perhaps, while everyone is healthy, the want Maye and to a lesser extent Milton getting every practice rep available without losing any to a 4th QB. Alex Van Pelt had 5 starting QBs as OC of the Browns in 2023. If needed, they probably believe they could coach an available QB up quickly if Brissett should get injured.

Brissett came off the bench in his second game his rookie year as a 3rd stringer. He was nowhere near ready and we managed pretty well.

If it got that far you see what Milton can do. Everyone always seems to overthink these sorts of things. It wouldn't be ideal but I'd imagine every team would be in a similar if not worse spot. I mean the Chiefs could be forced to play Zappe who is probably still on page two of their playbook.

Well, right now we don't have any broad-side-of-a-barn receivers so we're good with Milton.

I hear ya, but that was a little different. They knew Brady would be back in week 5, so they just had to get through a very brief pinch period. They obviously expected Garoppolo could handle just 4 games behind a good line. They didn’t yet know he was made of glass.

I think they’d survive with Milton but he’s pretty raw and he would be missing a lot of receivers with his heater passes, which hurts their ability to evaluate those guys. I don’t see any harm bringing in a seasoned journeyman or someone to hang around on the PS. I guess you could worry about that later once you sustain at least one injury though.

Other than develin, were any difference makers?

Depends how you define that. Sure that might not have been a Barry Sanders difference maker but if you're short a guard during a SB run and Hochstein is ready to step in that makes a difference.

Even if it were just one game it matters.

I am literally shocked you have to ask that.

Tom Ashworth? starting right tackle for Super Bowl XXXVIII...
Brandon Gorin? Started 8 out of the last 9 games of the 2007 season
Russ Hochstein? Swing Tackle/Guard Center for years, started 8 games across the line in 2007
Eric Alexander - eh, i'll give you that one
BenJarvus Green-Ellis? The "Law Firm"... was the lead back in 2010. topped 1000 yards, & had 13 rushing tds, 0 fumbles in his 4 years here...

I'd say all of them were difference makers.

Yes, the Practice Squad was very valuable when we had Scar Academy available to develop players.

OT, but Scarnecchia thinks highly of Scott Peters

I do not subscribe to the Globe. Are you able to provide a summary of said article?? I am a Scott Peters fan so this is good to hear. OT I hope Scar is enjoying retirement, he deserves it.
