Official 2022 Tompa Bay Gronkaneers Thread

All reports have Brady coming back so he’ll add to the stats ether it’s with Adams in Vegas or he stays in Tampa
I think the betting guys are putting their money on Vegas.

The 2022 season has turned out to be very similar to 2019. Both 1 and done. Both teams backing into the playoffs and both not finding an identity. Both OL were cratering right away. Lots of tight window throws to WRs. Lots of throwing aways in 2019 vs dump offs in 2022. Brady looking like he's on the downswing.

After 2019, you had Tampa who just booted their starting QB and let it be known they were going hard after Brady.

After 2022, Vegas appears to be following the same path.

yeah it feels weird for them to dump Carr unless they knew they were getting Brady or Rodgers

I'm thinking the same thing. Carr is a solid QB imo. Not elite but better then the likes of JG, Dalton, and other middling QBs. Probably in the same level as Dak and good enough to take a team deep into the playoffs.

No chance for Rodgers. The contract GB gave to Rodgers has basically fused them together until he decides to retire.

You can cross out Allen. He started slow and has missed games. He's a bruiser in the Roethlisberger mold and will slow as he ages.

You can also cross out Burrows who started at 24yo. He's already 2 years behind Herbert who started at 22yo.

Of the established QB, it's just Herbert and Mahomes who are a threat.
I agree Mahomes and Herbert represent the two biggest threats. Burrow seems to have that Brady it factor but we'll see if starts winning Super Bowls like Brady did. Burrow could emerge as the closest ring challenger (but none of these QBs are reaching 7).

Honestly, now that his season is over, Allen was a huge disappointment this season. He still showed flashes of that unique duel dominance but he made a lot of mistakes that are unfitting of an elite quarterback. He really needs to clean up his game to get himself back on track. Gab Davis turned out to be a dud WR2 as well. And they need an upgrade at RB. And a healthier defense. Even with all their shortcomings and mistakes, they still won 13 games (and remain way ahead of the Patriots).

Don’t forget Tampa was allegedly a bad choice as they weren’t ready then after the SB the apparently had a super team. Vegas is getting the same treatment there defense allegedly is the worst but the somehow lost 7 games by less the 7 points. How were they in games and blowing leads late without Waller/Renfrow if the defense is so bad, now add Brady for care and add Walker/Renfrow/ Gronk to the mix

Check that it’s 9 games they lost by 7 or less pretty absurd

Sorry but I can't agree with your comp here. The Bucs were considered a top 5 defense with DVOA and other metics; the problem was how do you overcome 30 interceptions and a pass-heavy offense and still keep point totals low? They had a nearly historically great run defense and arguably the best front 7 in the NFL. They had the weapons (Evans, Godwin) but there were questions about the offensive line. It's obvious that Brady improves offensive line play for many reasons...they also added Wirfs and Gronk, two of the very best at their position for blocking.

The Raiders suck. There's really not much you can do without a total overhaul at many positions, and they don't have the cap space/assets to do much. Brady would simply be going to a team with a few standout weapons; many teams around the league could provide a similar setup for their QB. An all-pro WR, a good slot WR, and a star TE...good stuff but hardly enough to make a real contender, even with Brady.

I really don't see a great choice for Brady if he truly wants to contend for a title. If he wants to put up stats then I think Vegas or Miami would be good but he won't contend for a title with those teams in the AFC. Now if Dallas came knocking or the Niners than it would be talk of a SB.

EVERYONE laughed at Brady resorting to the Bucs. It's been just insufferable the goal post moving that was done to explain the 2019 Bucs as a QB away. Yes in retrospect there were signs that they had more potential than they were showing. But no one, nationally and locally here anyway, was saying anything about that.

Yes those stats matter but there loses are with 7 points that matters as well. Brady proved he’s still winning those close games hell let’s say Vegas wins all the games they lost by 3 points or less. That puts them at 10-7 in the playoffs if Brady goes there there gonna surprise people

Regarding a team's Super Bowl chances with Brady, I would rank the teams this way:

1. San Francisco
Floor = division title
Ceiling = Super Bowl title

2. Dallas
Floor = wild card
Ceiling = Super Bowl title

3. Miami
Floor = wild card
Ceiling = AFCCG

4. Las Vegas
Floor = 3rd place in division & no playoffs
Ceiling = divisional round (via wild card)

5. Tampa Bay
Floor = 3rd place in division & no playoffs
Ceiling = divisional round (via 3 or 4 seed or wild card)

Regarding Brady's stats potential, I would rank the teams this way:

1. San Francisco
2. Miami
3. Las Vegas
4. Dallas
5. Tampa Bay

2, 3 & 4 are whisker close.

A few dark horses:

NYG - Doubt the Giants are smart enough to move on from Jones, but how about this? Trade Jones (some team would probably offer a first round pick), plus they have $45M in cap space with an already above average roster. Brady would probably like to play in NY for business reasons.

Seattle - Geno Smith threw 31 TDs, the team is on the upswing, and I think this is a decent fit. Anyone who thinks Smith’s season wasn’t flukey is fooling themselves. Seahawks have always been a run first team and I think Carroll would prefer a classic pocket passer.

Chicago - I know people will laugh, but the Bears have $82M in cap space. Who knows how good the offense/OL really is. I remember everyone thought the Broncos were garbage in 2012, and I see a lot of Tebow in Fields, making everyone else look incompetent. Big city, oldest team, still looking for first great one since Luckman.

Atlanta - The Falcons had a -21 point differential (close to average team) despite jokes at the QB position. $51M in cap space is fourth in the league. No need to overanalyze this one…a team on the NFL bell curve, playing in a terrible division, no serviceable QB, likely willing to go all in.

The only reasonable team here is NY

If the 49ers win the Super Bowl, there is no way Purdy isn't the starter next year.

If they lose with Purdy playing terribly, I think it's 50/50 Brady ends up in Santa Clara. Between Jimmy G in 2019 and this, it may inspire the 49ers to say enough is enough and we need an established top 10 QB.

Brady as a 49er would make them by far the best team in the NFC imo.
I doubt if this Sunday's game has any impact. The guy has won eight straight with the last two wins in the playoffs. I don't see him playing "terribly" on Sunday, and if he does, I think he'll be given a "mulligan".

I don't think Brady and Shanahan would coexist well if at all. Both have big egos and would have to give up power to coexist, and I don't think either is interested in doing that. If they succeed, both want the credit, and if they fail, both would not want the blame. Since Shanahan calls the shots in SF and he could have had Brady already but chose the other mf'er instead, I think it ain't going to happen.

Shanahan simply won't want to share the stage with Brady. He knows if he wins with Brady the narrative will be all about how he needed Brady to get over the hump. It's a very familiar story around here.

I've posted one link saying SF has already decided Purdy is their starter next year, and I can totally believe that. Shanahan has had total control over his development, and has him locked in at low dollars for the next three years. Shanahan doesn't have to cede power to him or retrain him like he would with Brady, nor would he need to pay him what a player of Brady's stature must be paid, so he'd have some desperately needed money to resign key players.

According to many sources Shanahan wanted Mac Wilson over Trey Lance, and this move would let that mistake fade into the background, kind of like how no one brought up Sam Rosen any more in Arizona once his replacement was found.

All in all, it feels like a done deal to me.

I think Brady is only playing in nice weather or a dome. So that wipes out the the first three. I also like Fields quite a bit. He's playing with nothing, no receivers of any value whatsoever. Give him something for next season.

I don't think Atlanta has enough on offense to entice Brady. Defense is really bad too. Brady should have much better options than Atlanta. If he's desperate then I could see him choosing a place like Atlanta or Tennessee but he'll probably choose retirement over a clearly sub-optimal situation.

Rams are more likely than any of those. (edit: never mind, they'd have $49M in dead cap if they trade Stafford).

These teams all have QBs except Atlanta. If any NY team is interested it's the Jets.

Brady is not going to go to any team. Now more than ever, it has to be a team that can help a 46yo to still play great.

The cap has never stopped the Rams from wheeling and dealing.
