While waiting on all-22 took a look at the line play. Surprisingly they played well enough for 1 quarter, the other 3 not pretty.
In Q1 they had 5 pass plays, 4 were blocked well, and then one third down and 3 it was mostly blocked well except Jacobs got beat by Bosa, Jacoby still got the throw away and threw low and incomplete. It was a negative and a loss for Jacobs but ended up not effecting Jacoby ability to throw, maybe he threw it sooner than he wanted, not sure. So technically 5 clean pocket throws in the first Quarter. That's it for the pass protection good news. Again, the biggest fault are the backups that are starting. Table below shows PASS plays I graded where they were responsible for hurting the play. They may have had other bad reps but if play was unaffected, I don't count it. A couple plays were on Jacoby for holding ball too long.
When they moved Bosa to be over Jacobs it was feast time. Jacobs was fine when Leonard Floyd was against him but when they switched Bosa to Jacobs side he was dominated by Bosa.
Sidy Sow-Looked pretty good overall though also looked a bit rusty and slower than he was in pre-season, had 2 bad pass protection plays. One he was beat pretty quickly on the same play Robinson was also being beat right away. The other he did not work with Jacobs on a stunt, they both blocked the same guy. but Sow should have come off his guy and passed to Jacobs and taken the stunting Bosa. Otherwise, he was solid, probably a bit of rust but confident Sow can nail down a guard spot with NFL level play.
Nick Leverett-Filled in admirable for Andrews, don't have him down as responsible for any bad plays on pass protection, was not great in preseason but played well for 1 game.
Michael Onwenu-I really hope after this year he goes back to guard where he can be a really good player, he lacks the real good quickness to be as good at tackle. He held up well enough and had him down for 2 bad pass pro plays. There was another 1 or 2 you could question but the QB was not hit and his guy slid buy the back so did not knock him for that. He does struggle a bit to get out quick enough. I think he is doing an admirable job for a guard forced to play tackle. He had Bosa against him early in the game and did really well overall against him, unfortunately they sent Bosa to the other side.
Leverett, Sow and Onwenu I can live with, even Onwenu at Tackle if Jordan or Strange can come back and play a guard spot, maybe. If Wallace healthy maybe a chance to go to RT and Onwenu to guard. Everyone healthy and Lowe cones back and plays OK you can make an NFL caliber line. Right now, not possible.
Unfortunately, Robinson and Jacobs are not ready to play starting NFL football.
Robinson and Jacobs-We can beat a dead horse with Robinson, for such a strong guy, the number of times he's pushed back on a pass rush just shouldn't happen. He also got beat by quickness a couple time this week They did not run a ton of stunts and blitzes so he escaped harm from those things that he struggled with previously. He's getting really good at being beat on back-to-back plays. He has 4.5 bad plays on pass pro but really its 5 bad ones as his split was only because someone else go beat on same play. He's killing them on pass plays. However, this week, the 4th string Left Tackle took the award for worst lineman. It was a tough category, but the vote was still unanimous. It was the worst game of the year by any lineman on the Patriots. He had an 18.8 PFF rating on Pass Blocking and that might be generous. PFF had 7 pressures by Robinson and 7 pressures by Jacobs. YIKES! They helped Jacobs twice that I saw, once Bosa threw Gibson aside like a rag doll and then also beat Jacobs to get to the QB. Jacobs is not an NFL player, never mind a starter, at this point anyways unless Bosa is really that much better than other NFL players? Who knew I'd ever be excited by the idea of Vederian Lowe coming back at some point.
Run blocking was, again, overall good but the starting lineman that should not be starting are killing them, other than Leverett. It is a bit frustrating knowing they have a gaping hole at RG and a bigger one at LT and if they could get healthy you have hope, especially at guard but seems health is a long way off.
Even at full health it comes down to LT and whether Lowe could hold up. Everyone knows it by now, but a starting LT is the #1 priority in the draft. If they can solidify that going into next year the pieces are there to have an NFL caliber line.
Until Lowe is at LT and they replace Robinson at guard not much hope things will get better.
In terms of running backs, Rhamondre left one on the ground, terrible, overall, the backs ran well, Gibson dropped an easy pass, got tossed by Bosa. Take out the fumble and those 2 plays and running backs played well.
Hopefully we get some health on the Line before the Miami game. Will go over WR and QB once all-22 is out.
