October 4, 2018: Tom Brady throws his 500th TD pass

Week 5, Game 5 at Gillette Stadium

QBs: Tom Brady, Andrew Luck

Patriots improve to 3-2, Colts drop to 1-4

What a difference five minutes makes. The Colts were threatening when they made it 24-17 with 12:48 left. But a Brady-to-Gordon touchdown, a pick by Jonathan Jones, and a Sony Michel touchdown puts the Patriots right back to a 21-point lead.

On a night when he reached 500 career touchdown passes, Tom Brady welcomed back a buddy with one of his three scoring tosses Thursday, then connected with a newcomer who could help him reach more milestones.

Brady also sneaked in for a rushing touchdown and the New England Patriots put together their second straight win after a mediocre start to the season, beating Indianapolis 38-24.

Brady's 500th went to Josh Gordon, recently acquired from Cleveland, where he basically was unavailable through NFL suspensions for all but five games over the past three seasons. But, as he often does, Brady spread the wealth, hitting running back James White 10 times for 77 yards, and greeting the return of buddy Julian Edelman by completing seven for 57 yards to him.

Adrian Clayborn/Patrick Chung

You've heard 3,000 times by now that good coverage is aided by good pressure, and vice versa. One play in the first half provided the perfect example.

On a second-and-3 at midfield, Adrian Clayborn lined up at right defensive end and ran a stunt, rushing in between the left guard and the center. Neither lineman could slow his progress, giving him a free lane to Andrew Luck. With Clayborn bearing down at full speed, Luck forced a throw to Nyheim Hines, and Luck missed badly.

Patrick Chung was in perfect position to make an interception, giving the Patriots an extra possession before halftime. The turnover not only kept the Colts from putting points on the board while trailing by 18, but it also allowed the Patriots to tack on a field goal before the break.

Tom Brady's 500th touchdown pass looked like a bad idea when he let the football go. On a scramble-drill type of play -- though there was no scramble, Brady just had an eon in the pocket and routes were freelanced as a result -- Brady launched one deep to the right corner of the end zone where two Colts defenders were waiting. But Brady knew he had a good jump-ball option on the other end. Not Rob Gronkowski, but Josh Gordon. Gordon began the play running an over route -- the majority of his targets through two games have come over the middle -- then broke outside when he realized the play had been extended. He fought through a mugging to reverse course, found the football in the air, and out-jumped the Indy defensive backs to catch his first touchdown as a member of the Patriots. His rare set of skills were on display for that one, and his ability to make a play in traffic should only help him earn more trust from his quarterback moving forward. Gordon is the 71st player to catch a pass from Brady, which is an NFL record.

Tale of two halves: By halftime, this one seemed to be a laugher. The thinking? Everyone could get to bed early to rest up for Red Sox-Yankees Friday night. The Patriots led 24-3 after two quarters, and were completely dominating the overmatched and undermanned Colts. New England nearly lapped Indy in every statistical category: Total yards, 248-141; First downs, 17-8; Passing yards 203-106; Third-down conversion percentage, 57-33. But in the second half, the Patriots gave up 298 total yards, Tom Brady was picked twice when his receivers gifted balls to the Colts, and Indianapolis made it a game, cutting the New England edge to 24-17 early in the third. A Josh Gordon touchdown, an interception of Andrew Luck when his receiver dropped it, and a Sony Michel scoring scamper later, it was 38-17 and, finally, over. But, man, that was a lot tougher than it should have been.

Julian Edelman did his Julian Edelman things in his return from missing the last 23 meaningful games, Josh Gordon tantalized in a limited role, and backs Sony Michel (game-icing 34-yard touchdown run) and James White combined for 187 total yards. An offense that looked waif-thin just two weeks ago now appears to have options to envy.

Patriots first-round pick Sony Michel is the first New England rookie to eclipse the 95-yard plateau on the ground in two consecutive games since Robert Edwards in 1998. Michel did so with a 5.4 yards per carry average and a back-breaking 34-yard touchdown run to put the Patriots up three scores in the fourth quarter.
The 34-yarder was a great example of the acceleration that Michel flashed in college at Georgia, and it appears that he’s now all the way back from the knee injury that took him off the field in the preseason. Michel bursts into the secondary behind a terrific pull block by right guard Shaq Mason and stiff arms the safety on his way to the end zone. That easy acceleration is why he was a first-round pick in April.

Julian Edelman returned to his first game action since the Super Bowl against the Falcons and didn’t seem to miss a beat. The Patriots made sure he was immediately targeted on the first play from scrimmage. Edelman had three catches on the first drive where Brady went 9-9 and finished it off with a TD pass to Cordarrelle Patterson. Edelman finished the game with seven receptions for 57 yards and was back returning punts as well.

October 4, 2010: Patrick Chung leads Pats to big win
Pats score TDs via run, pass, pick-six, blocked FG, kickoff return
New England 41, Miami 14

Week 4, Game 4 at Sun Life Stadium
New England Patriots 41, Miami Dolphins 14
Head Coaches: Bill Belichick, Tony Sparano
QBs: Tom Brady, Chad Henne
Odds: New England favored by 1
TV: ESPN; Mike Tirico, Ron Jaworski, Jon Gruden
Patriots improve to 3-1, Dolphins drop to 2-2

With his team leading 13-7 early in the third quarter, Chung slipped through the left side of the Dolphins' front line to block a punt that was recovered by the Patriots at the Miami 15-yard line.

Two plays later, Patriots running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis scored on a 12-yard run to make the score 20-7.

With the score 27-14 early in the fourth quarter, Chung again squeezed through Miami's front line, this time to block a 53-yard field goal attempt. The ball was recovered by cornerback Kyle Arrington and returned 35 yards for a touchdown, making the score 34-14.

Tom Brady threw for only 153 yards, and Randy Moss was held without a catch for the first time since 2006, but the NFL's highest-scoring team still registered its biggest point total yet.

The Patriots trailed 7-6 at halftime, but when Brandon Tate returned the second half kickoff 103 yards for a score, the deluge was on. Chung blocked a punt to set up a touchdown, then blocked a field goal that Kyle Arrington returned 35 yards for a score.

But early on, it was the Patriots’ defense looking ridiculous. Chad Henne completed his first seven passes in a row, including a 19-yard touchdown to Davone Bess to make it 7-0. The Patriots’ first quarter tackling in Miami would have been labeled SPF 0.

But when Chad Henne starts throwing you interceptions, poor tackling is not so much of a liability.

Patriots outside linebacker Rob Ninkovich picked off Henne once in the first quarter and again in the second, both times in Dolphins field goal range. Both picks led the other way to Steven Gostkowski field goals and the Patriots were down 7-6 at halftime.

They took the lead 13 seconds into the third quarter and then just kept finding fantastic new ways to embarrass Miami’s kicking teams.

Brandon Tate ran the second half kickoff 103 yards for a touchdown, and not one Dolphin defender got a hand on him.

It was Tom Brady’s 100th career win. He was 19-of-24 for a touchdown and no picks, and a supermodel quarterback rating of 107.1.

The New England Patriots had another big night, and this time the NFL's highest-scoring team totaled most of its points with Tom Brady and the rest of the offense cheering from the sideline.

Patrick Chung blocked two kicks and returned an interception for a touchdown, and New England scored twice on special teams to beat the hapless Miami Dolphins 41-14 on Monday night.

Brady threw for only 153 yards, and Randy Moss was held without a catch for the first time since 2006, but the Patriots still registered their biggest point total yet. They're averaging 33 points per game.

New England trailed 7-6 at halftime, but when Brandon Tate returned the second half kickoff 103 yards for a score, the deluge was on before a stunned crowd. In the fourth quarter, the stadium quickly emptied.

Chung blocked a punt to set up a touchdown, then blocked a field goal that Kyle Arrington returned 35 yards for a score.

He returned an interception 51 yards for New England's final score.

Another unexpected contribution came from linebacker Rob Ninkovich, who had the first two interceptions of his five-year career. Chung and Arrington scored their first career TDs, and Patriots reserve fullback Danny Woodhead scored on an 11-yard reception.

The Patriots totaled 17 points in a span of 2:16 bridging halftime to take command.

Miami's Chad Henne was 29 of 39 for 302 yards and two scores, but he was yanked with 61/2 minutes left after tying a career high with his third interception.

Henne blamed his first turnover on a forced pass, the second on inaccuracy and the last on a miscommunication.

Tate took the second-half kickoff in the end zone, cut toward the right sideline and scored untouched, giving the Patriots their first lead. Miami went three and out, and Chung blocked Brandon Fields' punt.

When the Dolphins lined up for a 53-yard field goal attempt that would have cut the deficit to 10 points, Chung again broke through to block the kick, and Arrington recovered with nothing but the end zone in front of him.

October 4, 2009: Ravens drop the ball
Pats defense makes two fourth down stops

QBs: Tom Brady, Joe Flacco

TV: CBS; Jim Nantz, Phil Simms
Patriots improve to 3-1, Ravens drop to 3-1

The Baltimore Ravens started and ended the game by dropping balls. The New England Patriots picked up a win against a team that kept coming back.

Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 32-yard field goal after Brandon McGowan recovered Chris Carr's fumble on the opening kickoff. Then Mark Clayton dropped a fourth-down pass with 28 seconds left that would have given the Ravens a first down inside the New England 10-yard line.

"That was quite a finish," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said after the 27-21 win Sunday. "Stop them on fourth down twice in the fourth quarter, that's when you've got to be there. Luckily, we were."

New England (3-1) kept scoring. Baltimore (3-1) kept rebounding but dropped to 0-5 all-time against the Patriots.

Tom Brady and Randy Moss hooked up for their first touchdown pass of the season, the Baltimore Ravens failed on fourth-down plays on their last two series and the New England Patriots held on for a 27-21 win Sunday.

Moss’ touchdown made it 24-14 late in the third quarter, but Joe Flacco’s 13-yard scoring pass to Willis McGahee cut that to 24-21. Stephen Gostkowski’s 33-yard field goal gave the Patriots (3-1) a six-point lead midway through the fourth quarter.

On the next possession with a fourth-and-1 at the Ravens 45-yard line, McGahee was stopped for no gain.

The Ravens (3-1) got the ball back with 5:09 left after a punt and moved to a fourth-and-4 at the 14. Flacco then threw to Mark Clayton, who was open beyond the first-down marker but dropped the ball with 28 seconds remaining.

Trailing 17-7 at halftime, the Ravens made it 17-14 when Terrell Suggs hit Brady for a sack and knocked the ball out of his right hand. Dwan Edwards recovered in the end zone for a touchdown with 6:19 left in the third quarter.

But Brady remained unshaken and led the Patriots downfield on their next possession, a 79-yard drive that ended with his touchdown pass to Moss. Brady unloaded the ball early as he was being blitzed, underthrowing it and allowing Moss to step in front of Domonique Foxworth for an open catch.

The Ravens responded with an 80-yard drive, 50 coming on a run by Ray Rice and the final 13 on the pass to McGahee.

The Patriots struck quickly after Brandon McGowan recovered Chris Carr's fumble as he returned the opening kickoff. But they couldn't get a first down and settled for a 32-yard field goal by Gostkowski.

Carr held on to the next kickoff and Flacco led the Ravens on a 15-play, 81-yard drive capped by a 20-yard scoring pass to Derrick Mason, who landed hard on his back but returned to the game. Mason had six catches for 77 yards on the drive.

The Patriots went ahead 10-7 on the next series with a 1-yard sneak by Brady then made it 17-7 with 3:57 left in the half as Sammy Morris scored on a 12-yard run.

The Ravens then drove from their 20-yard line to the Patriots 17 with a chance to cut the deficit to 3 at halftime. But Leigh Bodden intercepted Flacco's pass at the 9.

Notes: Moss's touchdown was his 137th, breaking a tie with Marshall Faulk and moving into sixth place in NFL history. ... Suggs set a club record with 437 sack yards on Brady's 14-yard sack that resulted in a touchdown. ... Baltimore held its 39th straight opponent without a 100-yard rusher, the longest current streak in the NFL. ... Patriots WR Wes Welker returned after missing two games with a knee injury.

For perhaps the first time during this young season, Tom Brady looked like Tom Brady again. Maybe it was the fact that Wes Welker was back on the gridiron. Maybe it was the fact that Bill Belichick did everything in his power to keep Joey Galloway out of the picture by rendering him inactive.

Whatever the case, Brady started making the throws he used to make pre-Bernard Pollard but hasn't since, including perfect 26-yard and 20-yard strikes to Sam Aiken and Randy Moss as the Patriots put together a critical scoring drive in the third quarter. The drive culminated in a nice little 14-yard lob pass to Moss, which put the Patriots up by 10 promptly after a Brady fumble was recovered for a touchdown. It was a huge momentum swing in the Patriots' favor, and it was Brady's first touchdown pass to a receiver in 2009 — and Moss' first TD catch.

For once, Brady's offense started clicking before it was too late, putting up an effort that featured 85 yards on the ground, 234 yards in the air and three touchdowns. One of those TDs came courtesy of a 1-yard run by Brady himself, his first since October of 2007.

Penalties killed Baltimore, plain and simple. The complexion of the game would have been completely different had it not been for two roughing-the-passer penalties in the first half, both of which led to touchdown drives.

Key Moment: The Patriots went up 27-21 on a field goal with just over seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, and they needed a defensive stop to keep the game in their hands. Flacco handed off to Willis McGahee for a four-yard gain, and he got within one yard of a first down after another short pass. Facing third-and-1 on his own 45-yard line, Flacco handed off to Ray Rice for no gain. Baltimore decided to go for it, and McGahee was stopped just shy of the first down. The Ravens turned the ball over on downs with just over five minutes left in the contest.

The New England Patriots squeaked-out a 30-27 win over the New Orleans Saints at the Louisiana Superdome.

The Saints scored 10-consecutive points in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 27. But on their ensuing drive, the Patriots drove the ball 70 yards on 8 plays setting up Adam Vinatieri's 27-yard field goal.

The big play of the drive was a nifty catch by WR Vincent Brisby from QB Drew Bledsoe, which put the Patriots deep in Saints territory.

Despite four turnovers - which included a fumble that was returned 63 yards for the touchdown by LB Keith Mitchell (7-3 Saints) - the Patriots were able to pullout the victory thanks to turnovers made by the Saints offense.

Perhaps the Saints most costly turnover was DT Henry Thomas' interception of QB Danny Wuerffel. Thomas returned the interception the distance giving the Patriots a 24-14 lead.

Other Notables:
* K Adam Vinatieri hit three field goals which included the game-winner and a 49-yard boot.

* CB Ty Law made another interception this week, extending his interception-streak to three games.

Gino Cappelletti set a team record that may never be broken, kicking six field goals in a blowout win at Denver. Gino was involved in every Pats scoring play, scoring 21 points on the day.

Ron Burton (36 yards rushing, 41 receiving) ran for the first of his two touchdowns to make it 19-0 at halftime. In the third quarter the Pats were unable to punch it in on two red zone opportunities, but Cappelletti - who converted on all six of his attempts, from 31, 30, 16, 48, 15 and 18 yards - gave the Patriots a 25-3 lead after three quarters.

Babe Parilli and found Burton in the end zone for a 7-yard TD on the first play of the fourth quarter, making it 32-3. J.D. Garrett padded the lead by running up the middle and cutting to the right, sprinting 42 yards to make the score 39-3 with 4:58 to go. Denver finally found the end zone with 51 seconds left to play on a 14-yard pass to five-time AFL all star Lionel Taylor.

Browning Nagle was a guy from Pinellas Park, Florida who became a hot commodity after he threw for 451 yards and led Louisville to a shocking 34-7 upset victory over Alabama in the Fiesta Bowl. While his pro football career was ruined due to being drafted by the Jete, he was still competent enough to lead Gang Green to a victory over the hapless 1992 Patriots.

The Patriots turned the ball over three times, ruining an incredible game by Irving Fryar. The former first overall pick caught eight of the nine passes that Hugh Millen threw his way, for 165 yards and two touchdowns. The Pats battled back, but a 17-0 halftime deficit was too much to overcome. The two teams combined to score 27 points in a wild fourth quarter.

For the first time in 21 days the Patriots took to the gridiron. Unfortunately it was with "replacement" players. The quality of play was about what one would expect.

Cleveland's scrubs were far more well prepared than the New England scrubs. The Browns ran for 217 yards, while holding the Patriots to 31 yards rushing on 27 attempts.

You read that correctly. Less than 44 inches per rushing attempt.

As for the game, the Patriots had a 10-0 halftime lead. Then they didn't.
