No Padding? then No Playing

Blame litigation not the Commissioner. He's doing everything he can to provide a safer work environment for the players. Sure, we don't like it (I agree that it's an incredibly stupid initiative) but in this day and age, it's inevitable.

I think a fine would be more appropriate,a player feels worse if cash is removed from their pocket than if they miss a play.

A fine hurts the player but removal hurts the team.

Good move in my opinion. I wear a padded girdle when i play therefore i never have a need to take out and of the pads as 7 lower pads are required in my league. As is having a chinstrap buckled at at least 4 points.

If you don't comply its a auto timeout if a ref sees it or delay of game if out of timeouts. these are 2 thing that reduce the risk of injury and don't change the game. If everyone is doing it its 100% fair and no one gains an advantage.

While removal for a play hurts the team it means the team are more likely to enforce it. A player like Gronk would earn $34K a week not $39K a week i it was a $5k fine it's not like that is really gonna break the bank.

back in the late 60's we used to play "corner ball"...that's where gangs from the different corners or streets in the city would get together and play full contact, no pads....I lived in Cranston, RI and being half Irish and a cop's son, all my crew were likewise...and the different corners we'd play, like Gansett Ave. and Thornton and Miami Diner, were Italian predominantly. The cops used to call a rescue wagon to sit idling at the games while we played...so every game there4'd be at least one broken something or other or the need for stitches. There was a code though, as long as YOU adhered to the rules of no rules, number one being..NO PADS.

so anyway, this one dink doink decides he's gonna wear a padded shirt and arm pads. You guys know what "muckle" means??? We actually begged guys on the other team to give him the ball so we could gang muckle him. Needless to say, he never showed up to play again. After every game, we all sat around all beat up and bruised, smoking butts and drinking Narragansett then shuffled off home for the rest of the week until next weekend.

Most of my friends from those days turned out to be pretty decent human beings...cops, firemen, lawyers, business owners...when we get together these days we always talk about how crazy we were back then...but you know, we weren't crazy after all. This stuff today is what's crazy.

It's a litigator's world. Sarcastaball, anyone?

Yeah, Joker, you were CRAZY! LOL - that poor muckled kid. His mom made him pad up :bricks:

muckle is a game you play when there's not enough guys for a real game so you give the ball to one guy and everyone tackles him. it also goes by the non pc name of "smear the queer". everyone gets a chance with the ball until everyone's exhausted.

goodell's just doing a cya.

OK, thanks for the explanation. Unfortunately I recognize it by its non-pc name.

If it were up to me I'd send them out with an iron helmet, a shield and their choice of weapon. Sadly, I'm not in charge.

Does anyone else see the business opportunity here? It is along the same lines as the wizzinator.

Make extremely light weight, but making the impression of "real" pads thigh and hip pads.

Problem solved, someone send me $$.

I like your style, mate! The Coliseum is already in place, as are the cheering, half-drunk crowds. Goodell is setting himself up as emperor so what the heck.

I support it -- it's a competitive issue. The players gain speed by shucking some pads, so if a player wants to wear the pads he's at a disadvantage. By strictly enforcing the pad requirements, everybody can just relax, wear the pads, and it evens out for everyone. Nobody gains a competitive advantage by his willingness to put up with risk.

Would you say this about Brady? No way. The true competitors would rather play. It's a much better punishment to keep them off the field. It hurts them, their pride, their team, it is very effective. Imagine if those helmet hits carried the penalty of having to sit out the rest of a game. People would suddenly learn to follow the rules really quickly.

Brady is one of the smarter players in the game,he would never forget something like this new rule.

There will be some idiots on teams that don't remember this requirement and WILL have to miss a play or two...that's for sure.

I believe there is a WR on Green Bay that has said he refuses to abide by this new rule.....
I hope then he succeeds in his post football career or change his stance now.

Goodell's new rule #7,326 for the upcoming NFL season

League intends to sideline players not following new padding guidelines | ProFootballTalk

Imagine Gronk or Talib for example having to leave the field for a very important down because they forgot to put their Pads on during the previous play.

Goodell becomes more babysitter than commissioner with each passing day
I'm not sure what the problem here is. The league has passed a rule in the interests of safety requiring certain protective gear is worn. What are they supposed to do? Turn a blind eye if they catch a player not wearing the league mandated equipment?

You complain about Gronk or Talib missing a play because they forgot to put their pads on, but let's look at it from another perspective. Padding tends to slow a player down so let's suppose Talib has his pads on but the WR he is assigned to "forgot" to wear his. How do you feel then? Should that WR be allowed to play on?

So all there saying is if a player does not put on all his padding then it's going to hurt the whole team.I would just make it so that they get a big fine not take them out of the game so it hrst the whole team.
