N'Keal Harry (lack of) Progress Report

He has a better chance catching balls in traffic against pro DBs versus him trying to gain separation against pro DBs. He's just not quick enough.

Still mystified why they picked this guy as high as they did and isn't using him to his strengths or expecting him to do things (like gain separation) he never did well in college.
They’ve tried to get him some balls in traffic. Unfortunately, they either went the other way or he got lit up like Hiroshima.

Deebo Samuel ran a 4.48 at the combine, that's a 4.5 with a good polish on it... Harry ran a 4.5 only he's much bigger and stronger.

As for all the hemming and hawing over DK Metcalf and why the Patriots (and 32 other teams) passed on him for two rounds... it could be that he broke his neck six months before the NFL combine, he had nominal college production and as good as he has been with the best QB in the NFL throwing to him he is still a three route runner who effectively works as a field stretcher.

The Patriots passing attack has sucked for the two years Harry has been in the league, he missed 2/3rds of his rookie season with the only good QB he had the opportunity to work with, and that guy was a cranky old guy with one foot out the door. All the receivers they should have taken instead have played twice as many games as Harry, and have twice as many (or more) targets as Harry... and good targets.

Harry has Cam. Harry has terrible targets. Cam is why Harry is going to miss another game this week with a concussion.

Cam sucks... period. A weapon is only as good as the QB's ability to get him the ball.

Stop with the 40 times, honestly. Aiyuk ran the same 40 as Harry, look at both players with the ball in their hands, which guy actually plays fast? Harry played poorly with Brady, now he's playing poorly with Cam, Jakobi Meyers replaced him and immediately had himself a nice game with the same QB throwing the ball. Has any credible media person been even moderately impressed with Harry in the last two training camps? He can improve as a player, he's not a complete bum, but right now he's not anywhere near good enough.

Aiyuk can get the ball in his hands, Harry can't. Meyers had a good game? The Pats were down multiple scores and Cam had to throw. Harry had a good catch for a first down and got decapitated by Cam immediately after, he was on his way Meyers like production like he had in weeks one and two.

If someone here says 4.5 is slow... it's not. Especially for a 6'3" 225 pounds receiver. If Harry is slow so is Mike Evans or AJ Brown. Get this kid in a healthy passing offense and we'll be able to critique him properly. This isn't it.

Slow off the line. Dorsett has blazing speed how come he doesn’t get open as much? Aiyuk’s tape is a lot different than Harry’s tape. He’s faster than 4.5. He had core injury when he ran at the combine.

Are you N'Keal's brother? Even the most ardent of homers are pretty much done with him.

Going back to 2001, out offense was centered around ball control using shifty receivers that didn't fit the mold for other teams (the big, fast, diva WR) so we could draft them late or walk them on, etc.
Somehow we either forgot how to find those guys or we just changed as a team. Harry doesn't fit in with any of our prior receivers.
He can't separate like Welker, Brown, Givens, Gafney, or Branch. He is Randy Moss without the speed and ability.
Having said that, there must be a place for him if BB thought highly enough to make him a top pick ahead of Samuel, Metcalf, etc. Those were the "easy" picks. He was the tough pick.

so every fast big WR is a diva ?

He had the GOAT throwing him the ball last year. The same guy that’s on track to win the MVP this season. Guess what? He was still trash.

We've gone over this ad nauseam... the GOAT was too injured to practice last year. Stidham took all of the weekly practice reps. So Tom never practiced with N'Keal (except for a few passes on his lawn in the offseason), Jakobi or Gunner for that matter. Also Tom was moping around like sad sally after the Patriots cut AB and Sanu got hurt.

Tom is playing in a new system this year with probably the greatest collection of weapons in league history, he's paid, happy and getting the respect he wanted. He was burn't out in New England and playing hurt. As in life, context is important when discussing football.

He was too injured to practice, and was soooo checked out, that he threw for over 4,000 yards with a 3 to 1 TD/INT ratio. A couple of those TDs went to Harry himself. Harry himself was getting starter reps at the end of the season. Harry himself was so good playing with the GOAT, that the Patriots had to design gadget plays and had him taking hand-offs out of the backfield because he was otherwise useless at getting separation against pro DBs. You’re making excuses here. The kid’s been a bust, to date. He was lauded for his brains (see his Wonderlic score) and ability to use his physicality to win contested balls, so his understanding of the offense can’t be used as an excuse, either. If that was the case, he wouldn’t have been seeing the reps he was seeing at the end of 2019. He just flat out sucks.

It's funny how Tom's inability to practice with these guys is an "excuse," but Cam not practicing for two weeks is a valid.

Over the final six games of 2019 Tom completed roughly 56% of his passes at 6 yards per attempt. He was injured (not an opinion), he wasn't practicing, he was disgruntled because of what went on during the season with AB and Sanu, he had already run Meyers off the field after a two game stretch where Meyers caught 9-9 targets and played well... but Tom really wanted more Sanu. In short, last years offense to finish the year was toxic at best and the passing attack anemic. They were actually running the ball better at that point and the offensive line was healthy.

I'm not even here saying Harry, Byrd, Meyers, Gunner or Zuber are amazing, I'm saying they can't be judged unless someone starts throwing better.

Yes! You must have and pasted that from my post.
Of course not every fast WR is a diva. My point was that we took the guys that didn't fit the criteria all the other teams were trying to fulfill. We went for small, shifty separation guys to work the short passing game.

last year we blamed Brady for this haha now Brady is turning Miller into a mini Edelman
