Technically you're correct. Denver was 11-5 and missed the playoffs in 1985. The difference is that in 1985 there were only five playoff teams per conference--the extra division and hence, extra wildcard team, didn't come into existence until the early 90's. If there had been six playoff teams in 1985 like there are now, the Broncos would have qualified as the six seed.

That leaves what happened to NE this year as unique in NFL history.

in the same division different conference schedules based on where you finished the year before. Miami basically gets in over us because our two seeded games were vs Indy and Pitt when theres were vs Texans and Cincy (I believe).

Except that the Dolphins are getting in because they beat the Chargers and the Patriots did not. Both the Dolphins and the Pats lost to their AFC South and AFC North opponents. The Dolphins played Baltimore and the Texans.
