WR 3-cone numbers up at Steelers' Depot:

2014 NFL Combine Results: Wide Receivers | Steelers Depot

Of note:

- Jeff Janis 6.64 - gives credence to those who say he moves like a slot receiver
- Kevin Norwood 6.68
- Odell Beckham 6.69
- Brandin Cooks 6.76
- Michael Campanaro 6.77 - not that far off of Edelman's 6.62
- Devin Street 6.89
- Jordan Matthews 6.95 - outstanding
- Sammie Watkins 6.95
- Done Moncrief 7.02
- Mike Evans 7.08 - pretty good for a big man
- Paul Richardson 7.09
- Martavis Bryant 7.18
- Brandon Coleman 7.33
- Kelvin Benjamin 7.33

Again, for comparison, Logan Thomas ran a 4.6 40 with a 35.5" vertical and 7.05 3-cone at 6'6" 248#. Better than any of the TEs, and in the territory of some of the WRs. Very close to Mike Evans (better short shuttle and 3-cone, almost identical 10 yard split, slightly slower 40, slightly less vertical).

Mayo look at Devin Streets numbers

Thomas with a 7.05 3-cone and 4.18 short shuttle. Better short shuttle than Jimmy Graham (4.39), slightly slower 3-cone (6.90), but still respectable.

Thomas' numbers compared with Cam Newton's from 2011:

- Thomas: 6'6" 248#; 4.60 40, 1.59 10 yard split, 35.5" vertical, 9'8" broad jump, 4.18 short shuttle, 7.05 3-cone

- Newton: 6'5" 248#; 4.56 40, 1.58 10 yard split, 35" vertical, 10'6" broad jump, 4.18 short shuttle, 6.90 3-cone

Gives you some sense of what Thomas should be able to do if you can get the ball to him with some room to maneuver.

For comparison, Dobson had a 7.19 last year, Boyce had a 6.68 and Thompkins had a 6.88.

Also Mark Harrison, at 6'2.7", 231 pounds had a 6.99 3 cone. Same weight as Evans, an inch and a half shorter and a better 3 cone. I'd love to know if we have something there or not.

Looking at this year's WRs, I wonder where Dobson and Boyce would fit in, in terms of slotting.

That's a good reminder. Boyce, for example ran a 4.34 40 at 5'11" 206# with a 1.54 10 yard split, 6.68 3-cone, 10'11" broad jump. Very solid.

Probably a couple of picks later than they were since the 2014 class has so many underclass men.

- Ryan Shazier: 25
- Tyler Starr: 24
- Carl Bradford: 23
- Khalil Mack: 23
- Kyle Van Noy: 21
- Trent Murphy: 19
- Christian Kirksey: 16

Also a 4.37 40, 38.5" vertical, and 10'9" broad jump. All outstanding. And Harrison has 35" arms, about the same as Evans.

What was the injury that made him drop so far? Wasn't he being touted as a possible 2nd round pick early in the process? Those combine numbers certainly seem to say 2nd round pick.

For the most part, combine numbers say what you want them to say.

That's deep.

I wasn't trying to be profound, smartass.

My point was that they're twisted according to agenda. A player runs fast and someone doesn't like that player, it's "Well, he's much slower in pads". A player runs slow and someone loves that player, it's "But he's got great football speed".

And so it goes...

Looking at prospects who tested out similar to Aaron Dobson and Josh Boyce. Martavis Bryant = Dobson, Odell Beckham = Boyce.

I like Dobson when he got over the rookie jitters. He was starting to be productive before the injuries. Hopefully that is not a trend because he played well.

Still not sure on Boyce but he did have some great production in college followed by a real nice combine. Hopefully he benefits early from ota's and training camp. I'd take Beckham over Boyce.

Jeff Janis essentially was drafted by the Patriots today, he would be a great fit as our Z-WR in a three wide set with –

X-WR – Dobson
Y-WR – Edelman (or Amendola if Edelman walks)
Z-WR – Janis

The reason I say this is Janis is excellent after the catch, he runs like Edelman and Welker at 6’3” 220 lbs.

If we could draft –

#93 – Fiedorowicz
#126 – Janis
#190 – Burton

Then use the remainder of our picks on the offensive line and defense I would be beyond floored.

I think it's important to recall how much athletic talent the Pats added at WR last year:

1. Aaron Dobson. 6' 2 3/4" 210#, 33" arms, 9" hands. 4.37 40, 1.51 10 yard split, 7.19 3-cone. 35" vertical, 10' 1" broad jump.

2. Mark Harrison. 6' 2 7/8" 231#, 35# arms, 9 5/8" hands. 4.37 40, 1.59 10 yard split, 6.99 3-cone. 38.5" vertical, 10' 9" broad jump.

3. Josh Boyce. 5' 11 1/8" 206#, 31 1/4" arms, 9 1/4" hands. 4.34 40, 1.54 10 yard split, 6.68 3-cone, 34" vertical, 10' 11" broad jump.

4. Kenbrell Thompkins. 6' 0 5/8" 193#, 32 1/4" arms, 8 3/4" hands. 4.46 40, 1.56 10 yard split, 6.88 3-cone, 33.5" vertical, 10' 1" broad jump.

5. TJ Moe. 5' 11 1/2" 204#, 30 1/8" arms, 9 7/8" hands. 4.68 40, 1.50 10 yard split, 6.53 3-cone, 36" vertical, 10' broad jump.

That's a very competitive group of young receivers with this year's group, from a pure athleticism perspective. They've all had a year to learn the playbook and system, and 3 of them have substantial game experience. It's easy to fall in love with some of the raw WR talent in this year's draft, but I'm not convinced that there are many guys who would be a substantial athletic upgrade over what we already have in the pipeline.

I think you're being a little premature. I grant you Janis' numbers were impressive.

Like Jerry Maguire – Belichick is going to be like “you had me at your 3-cone time”.
