When did brady say he ceded the decision to his family?
I read this in the last couple of days. Maybe at the beer drinking episode?
His wording was something like his retirement would be a family decision.

Brady says that he will let his family decide things for him. With the recent
information about former Patriots with CTE, maybe they have decided one
more season and then out. McCarron would bench sit one year and then start
next year. Hoyer would remain because he knows the system and be McCarron's
backup next year.

Sounds like an excellent way to get a top 10 pick the following season.

McCarron isn't good. Do not want.

Grabbing a QB on a 1 or 2 year deal makes sense.

I believe Belichick is trading out of the 1st round this year to gain a 1st round future pick to use on a QB.

Or, McCarron is wampum. The market on QB is exploding. You do two things now and another for the Draft. McCarron is younger than Hoyer. He has some intangibles of a fairly reasonable start or two and BB's Alabama connection. You have protection with a QB with possibly more skill than Hoyer coming into the season
Come training Camp, some Team will be looking and desperate just as the Colts last year. McCarron could get some lavish picks.

If the Pats do not get a QB of quality in the Draft and in training camp McCarron wins out, he's only 27. Brady lasts for three more years (or even 2). McCarron would be 29 or 30 when he takes over. He's not Brady but he learns under Josh and TB for a couple years.

Maybe the Pats have looked at the Whites, Falks and Laulettas and see more upside in McCarron.
Win either way.

Although it was in the aftermath of the Super Bowl loss Brady clearly changed his tune on “ playing until he’s 45.” I think bringing McCarron in would be a smart move, and coupled with drafting a QB it would give them a strong QB unit this season, and more insurance going forward.

We don’t have much cap room, even if we could get him to settle for 8M, that’s still way too much out of our cap.

BB trade out of the first round?

I'm shocked I tell you. Shocked!

The guy came into the league as a 5th round pick because he has a weak arm, inability to recognize the blitz, and inconsistent accuracy. He had never had to carry a college offense on his own and had played with a lead with almost every single snap he took in college. He was compared to Matt Cassel as a best-case scenario. Since he's entered the league, he's done very little to shake those comparisons.

When Dalton got hurt in 2015, McCarron was efficient but unspectacular in 5 games, but the Bengals' offense got slowed to a crawl compared to where it was with Dalton. He couldn't put them over the top against a frankly inferior Steelers team in the playoffs. He's done nothing since.

I don't see what he provides as a backup over Brian Hoyer, so unless the latter is planning to retire this doesn't make any sense to me. McCarron's the latest in the series of later-round quarterbacks who end up hyped to the moon without any sort of real world evidence that says they're any better than they were when teams passed on them 4 or 5 times several years ago. This isn't Jimmy Garoppolo sitting behind Brady and impressing every time he saw the field; this is a guy sitting behind Andy Dalton and looking fine at best the only chance he got.

Frankly, the only way this makes sense, and those words are doing a lot of work, is if they're trying to deny him to the Bills as a caretaker for whatever rookie they end up with (or trying to drive up the price), but it's going to be a stupidly expensive gambit if it works. Would you rather have Dion Lewis or AJ McCarron?

Yep I don't understand BB the GM here either!

A note on Hoyer. From what I have found online. We will actually lose just under 600k In caproom if we cut him. So he isn’t going anywhere.

We may keep Hoyer, but $600K isn't even worth mentioning as a reason.

This report has me scratching my head.

Especially because the craze for paying halfway proven qbs will make him semi expensive.

When did brady say he ceded the decision to his family?

Yeah, this seems unlikely. From what I remember, it's the opposite. His wife and father have both been urging him to step away but he doesn't want to stop playing.

3 years $24 million doesn't mean a $8M cap hit.

bonus $9M
2018 $1M
2019 $6M
2010 $8M
cap hit $4M

You could increase the bonus to $12M and have a $5M a year 2018 ca hit.

You could add$2M to 2018 and $1M to 2019 and have a $5M 2018 cap hit (or even have a $2M option bonus in 2019 in addition to a $5M salary instead of a $6M salary).

BOTTOM LINE
A cap hit of $4M or $5M is doable; IF both sides are interested.

The entire thing is a reference to the final act of the last Tom vs. Time episode. He essentially says that he sees that playing football means at the same time sacrificing on his family and that ultimately the point will come where the family will take focus away from the sport.

It was never literally meant as in its up to Giselle.

Lmao

Patriots making waves. Putting the league on notice

Eh, still doesn’t seem like a great move for both sides. Just draft a QB. McCaron would be better off finding a spot he can start sooner.

I am not saying it’s significant. But that also doesn’t account for the amount of cap used on the player that takes his roster spot.

My greater point is cutting Hoyer does nothing for this team unless we need his roster spot during camp cuts. So we won’t be cutting him anytime soon.

Sure, there is no reason to cut Hoyer before August, in any case.

I am really getting sick of Bill picking up the phone, talking to Saban, and signing guys like this. There isn't a Rutgers guy we can sign, an athletic kicker maybe, and then maybe coach him up to be QB2?

BB is stuck in a rut. Relying on "his guys" far too much. Where's our scouting dept?

I'm very frustrated. I knew Butler was gone, Lewis and Playoff Danny were gone. I thought they'd sign Solder. I don't know what the hell he's doing in Foxboro. AJ Freakin McCarron. Who the hell cares.

Zolak is absolutely adamant that the Pats are not in on AJ per a source he trusts above any other one.
