I don't think you should be able to fake doing something that's taking advantage of a rule implemented for your own protection. It just isn't fair to the defenders. They ease up because they don't want to get flagged.

Just to follow up on this point, the NCAA announced today that the fake slide will no longer be allowed. Any player who starts the sliding process will be considered to have taken a slide at that point.
