If you want to look at an example of a team that shot their wad too early just look at the Dolphins. They started going after big name players when they weren’t ready, e.g. Tyreek Hill, Bradley Chubb, and Jalen Ramsey. They haven’t sniffed a playoff win, are in bad cap shape, ended up losing top defenders in Wilkins and Van Ginkel because they overspent, and are further away from contending now than they were when they made those moves. Timing matters in roster construction. You have to know where you are in the big picture and put pieces in place according to that bigger picture. Just going out and loading up almost never works. And the best way to win Lombardi’s is to employ the overall strategy that Belichick used. Put yourself into the tournament with a true contender year after year, and you will come away with Lombardi’s. The teams that try to do it in short windows of opportunity almost always fail ( e.g…Jets & Dolphins) The Patriots and Chiefs dynasties both followed that path, and it has paid off handsomely for both of them. And Buffalo and Detroit are both demonstrating that knocking on the door isn’t enough, you have to do it for longer stretches because even really good teams get upset or run into better teams.

Huck, it has relevance because we can't ignore that we missed on the draft. Bill was ultimately fired due to the drafting.. the drafting is a reason why the roster isn't good. Look at KC they drafted well, eagles drafted well. Post brady we haven't. The roster has bottomed out. I agree the trenches is where we need to dedicate resources. Furthermore realistically who knows what Cleveland would take for Garrett. Any contender is going to have give up draft capital.

Which is why you don’t give up high picks at this point.

Yep coaching is a big part of it but as we all know the team needs talent to compete with the upper echelon teams.

We don't need all-pros at each position I mentioned but if Vrabel can improve each unit the playoffs are not an unreasonable goal in 2025.
Yes sir! This just feels so good.having great coaching back in the building. We have that and now it's time to aggressively attack FA. We need starting caliber players and outside of STs every unit stands to see improvement. I mentioned yesterday we need to add someone at WR that will take Drake to the next level. Someone like what diggs did for Allen. Vrabel isn't going to put out a defensive line that gets ran on 17x.

Well, on the other hand he is an accelerant to getting back in the playoffs.

QB- Check
CB1- Check
Pass rusher- Check
LT- Need
DT- Need
LBs- Need
WRs- Need

If they can nail down the "needs" over the next two years and Garrett can give them 4 years or reasonable top-level prod for a 2nd rounder it would be worth it.

The problem is age. He's going to be 30 at the end of next season. Ideally you want to overpay for a guy like him when you are guaranteed to be in SB contention from the first year up through the first 3 years. Even if everything goes right we are basically burning the first year on a big money contract because we won't be close to rebuilt and ready to win a SB next year. So you are hoping for a huge year next year.

Realistically it's bad to make win now moves when you are hoping it might help you win at the very tail end of the conrtact.

If the Pats trade the fourth overall for Garrett, I would call for them to fire everyone including Vrabel and demand the Krafts sell the team. You are trying to get an elite player who can be elite for your team for the next decade or longer with the fourth overall pick. Not a player, even elite, who is going to be 30 this December.
Yup. If we were mid dynasty or on the cusp, then yeah make the splurge. And even then, 4th overall is insane when you can just use that to get a blue chip talent locked in cheap for several years.

Thats my concern as well.

For this to be a consideration, they need to nail FA and the draft. Hypothetically if they land a starting LT, 2 WRs, maybe a stud LB, trading for Garrett in June makes sense as they will be on paper a playoff contender. Once they are in the playoffs anything can happen.

But yea i'm not giving up anything in the 1st round for him.

That’s the type of aggressive trade that Baltimore would make, but the Browns will never trade him to Baltimore. My other guess would be the Rams.

Yup. It's pretty much a guarantee that the Pats can get either Graham or Carter at 4. So if pass rush is that big, we can either get one of them in their early 20's and have them locked down for 4 years on the cheap to build around and then when we have to decide on paying them they are still in their mid 20's OR we can trade it to pay top dollar for Garrett who will be 30 by the end of next season and hoping he's still elite by the time we have any chance to make runs

This would be fun if Barmore is 100%

Carter/Barmore/Godchaux/Garrett

or

Wise/Barmore/Graham/Garrett

When he started there the Browns looked like they were turning a corner. They had the horrible 0-16 season, but the jumped right to middle of the pack, they got Baker, looked like they finally had their QB, they had Stefanski and looked like they had stability at coaching. They finally won their first playoff game since they relaunch in the 90's after the team moved.

The Watson signing completely destroyed all of that and you know the team is stuck with this disaster and horrible contract for a bit. Now's the time to get out before he hits the wrong side of 30 and his options start becoming limited.
First of all, I would've told the Browns I'm not playing for them when they had the #1 overall pick in 2017 and eyed going to the 49ers who had the #2 pick with Kyle Shanahan as the HC. This was something I had brought up before that top prospects need to do a little more research on what team could potentially pick them. We've seen too many top prospects flame out or underwhelm due to the dysfunction of the franchise they end up with.

The last player to put their foot down and refuse to play for a team was Eli Manning in 2004 when the Chargers drafted him when they were told not to. The rebuttal I hear is that the Manning's had pull which is ridiculous. No team is going to waste a high draft pick on a player if they feel they refuse to play for them. 99.9% of players really don't really give a **** and would rather be picked as high as possible for the higher payout. More top prospects should follow what Eli did.

Do the Rams have any draft capital??

What do you think about Joe Milton and a 5th rounder for him??

Does he have a no-trade clause so that he can control where he goes?
