If you want to look at an example of a team that shot their wad too early just look at the Dolphins. They started going after big name players when they weren’t ready, e.g. Tyreek Hill, Bradley Chubb, and Jalen Ramsey. They haven’t sniffed a playoff win, are in bad cap shape, ended up losing top defenders in Wilkins and Van Ginkel because they overspent, and are further away from contending now than they were when they made those moves. Timing matters in roster construction. You have to know where you are in the big picture and put pieces in place according to that bigger picture. Just going out and loading up almost never works. And the best way to win Lombardi’s is to employ the overall strategy that Belichick used. Put yourself into the tournament with a true contender year after year, and you will come away with Lombardi’s. The teams that try to do it in short windows of opportunity almost always fail ( e.g…Jets & Dolphins) The Patriots and Chiefs dynasties both followed that path, and it has paid off handsomely for both of them. And Buffalo and Detroit are both demonstrating that knocking on the door isn’t enough, you have to do it for longer stretches because even really good teams get upset or run into better teams.
