(MOD EDIT:) SPECULATION: Gronk to be traded to Tampa Bay?

I’m not taking anything less than a 2nd. Jason Whitten was toast, took a year off, and came back and played pretty well, Gronk is a 30 year old 1st ballot HOF player, if he wants to play either return to the Patriots, or hope you can get them a 2nd.

You’re not bitter. You’re nuts. He’s not playing for us. If he does want to play for the Bucs and we can get a 5th, I’m all in.

Disagree completely, it isn’t a yard sale, they already got Brady for just the price of the contract and the Patriots shouldn’t be in the market of giving away players to make Brady and them happy.

No. Because Gronk said that the only QB he would play with is Brady.

Then I guess that’s his problem, the Patriots have the rights to him so either get real value or let him play here.

Having checked out the Bucs forums, it seems Patriots fans are taking this idea much more seriously than Bucs fans.

I don't think Gronk is ever coming back to the NFL, but definitely not to the Brady-less Patriots. If we can get a 5 for what is essentially a retired player, that's a win. He's not going to make our 2020 any harder unless somehow both teams make the Super Bowl.

There are Bucs Forums?

I'll cut off my nose to spite my face on this. I've take value or nothing vs. giving him away and seeing him and his QB winning a SB on us. Yeah, I'm bitter

I don't care if the Brady Bucs win a SB as long as it isn't at our expense. The odds of us playing the Bucs at home in SB LV are pretty low.....nobody has ever hosted a SB....and I am not sure our team will be better than 8-8 vs. this year's brutal schedule...

But if it happens....F Tommy and Gronk then! LFG!!!

Take this for what this is worth but I have a friend in the Pats personnel who said he is currently working on the paper work to un-retire Gronk and then trade to Tampa Bay. I know this story has been making the rounds the last few days on the sports shows but it appears it could be a reality.
Gronk's body was broken and that Super Bowl was its last gasp. If Tampa really makes a trade for him, they are fools.

I thought we were 8-8/9-7 with Brady. Who knows what the floor is with this year's squad. In the end, though, the more we use this year to rebuild the better.

The Patriots should do what's in the best interest of the Patriots. If they can get value in exchange for someone who isn't going to ever play for them, it might not be a bad idea. And what happens if Gronk forces their hand by simply unretiring?

I don't think this is real at all, but just for the fun of the speculation, I'll bite - I really do wonder who "holds the cards" here. It's nice to get compensation for a guy who would otherwise just stay retired, but at the same time you don't want to just get walked over. "Hey yeah uh I retired but now I'm gonna un-retire but ONLY if you trade me away from YOU and ONLY to THIS place." I think Bill would rather get nothing and make Gronk stay retired than accept anything less than a 3rd for this.

Suppose Gronk could un-retire anyway and try to force their hand with his cap hit against their tight cap room but Bill could trade him wherever he wants. Wouldn't be shocked to see Bill cut Sanu and Cannon just to make room to absorb Gronk and make him languish on the roster until the compensation is good enough.

He had one more year left in him...He could have - AND SHOULD HAVE - played this past season.

I made a thread called " the value of TE", .where I made the point that Gronk not playing the second half of the season, cost the Patriots BIG TIME.

WITH Gronk , the pats were a super bowl contender... IMO

how will he be kept if he comes back where is the cap space coming from especially when he makes it clear he isn’t suiting up to play for Stidham

This only makes sense if you think Gronk would come out of retirement to play for the Patriots otherwise in 2020. I don’t think he would. If he comes back on condition of a trade, I pull the trigger and take a 5th for him. He’s done anyway. His best value at this point is as a blocker, and Gronk coming back is not going to be the difference between this being a mediocre team and a Super Bowl contender this season.

I see it different Kontra. I think that if Gronk comes back it’s as a receiver, not a blocker, and he’s only 30 and an amazing player. I think Tampa went all in on Brady so they need to load up to finish the deal, so I would make them pay a decent, but not high price to get him. And with Brady nothing matters more than the 3rd down receiver you count in to keep drives going, so Gronk is a big get for Tampa.

What if physically he just really needed a year away from the hits?
Then I really wish he had informed Bill of his intentions before the free agency period began, instead of two weeks before the draft.

He sucks at wrestling and acting and tv analysis.. his real dream is porn star but he can do that when he's 40.

Maybe it gets thru to his limited attention.. since he has a couple girls performing on his porn equipment... That football is his only option for the extent that his body can hold up .. to the tune of 10 million per year? He should be not dumb enough to refuse that.

I think the idea is that Gronk will say he's coming out of retirement only to play for the Bucs or he won't come out of retirement at all. He holds all the cards. BB would then have to decide whether he just wants Gronk to stay retired or whether he's like, ok cool, I basically will get a free pick or something for him.

On the flip side, Belichick can say, either stay retired, or you're coming out of retirement to play for the Pats. Then it's up to Gronk to decide what to do. In that case, he's likely to stay retired.
