He was pretty efficient in college, wasn’t overly explosive and didn’t turn the ball over much in his one final year as starter.

Looks like a Jacoby or a similar “good” at best QB if he maximizes his opportunity. Arm strength is largely overrated, most passes come in the first 10-30 yards.
Yes. That's where you need arm strength the most... those short to intermediate passes especially to the EZ and 15 yards up the middle. A weak arm has those passes knocked down or worse.

Brady wasn’t a starter when he left college, and wasn’t a starter when he began his pro career.

Yet he ended up the GOAT.

How amazing is that?
What? He started the Orange Bowl game, his final college game.

Milton is going to have a very good preseason against the 3rd and 4th stringers one normally faces in the preseason. As such, he will gain a degree of irrational exuberance from the local fandom. There will be those calling for him to start.

If he had average accuracy the conversation would be quite different, but he wouldn't have gone in the 6th, either.
His 65% completions, 7.9 YPA and TD/INT ratio was decent.
Pats did not need another QB after drafting Maye, but they drafted Milton because he was too good a prospect to pass up, and at a premium position.

Can’t see them not keeping him.
This goes back to the prior regime. When you have one position to fill, you draft one high, draft one low or bring in an UDFA or two, then bring in a value vet.

Draft prospects are unreliable, the draft is a crapshoot. Multiple bites at the apple is the smartest course of action.

Brains and heart is 98% of the job. Joe Montana and Kirk Cousins don’t have strong arms.

This might actually be a year where it’s worth carrying four quarterbacks. Milton isn’t going to be ready to play and Maye shouldn’t play with a potentially awful line. And with an awful line, Brisset may get hurt. Perhaps keeping Zappe as a Brisset insurance plan just for this year might make sense.

I think he will clear waivers in end up on the PS

I am not as high on Milton as others
I hope I’m wrong
I watched a bunch of Vols podcasts
They said it is hard not to fall in love with his arm
But they were not high on him
They seem to think he needs to be pushed, does not layer or have touch on passes and he is a bad processor
They questioned his love for the game also

Don’t say Zappe, say “a veteran backup QB,” or a fine idea like yours will be instantly rejected. The idea of Zappe staying a Patriot can induce seizures for some folks here.

Any of those will sink his career, and drive and love for the game aren’t correctable (although money can be a passable substitute)

Force on Zappe.

Why do people think I’m a Zappeist? I have said many times:

1. The fact that Zappe has not been cut and replaced yet is evidence that he is not “total garbage” (at least not in the eyes of Mayo and Wolf), as some here maintain. He’s getting coaching and reps. If they find someone better, cut him. I don’t care. But he’s a polarizing player that causes people to be irrational, to the point of attributing to others positions and attitudes about him unfairly (as you have).

2. I have said multiple times that you can replace Zappe with “veteran backup QB” in any of my arguments involving the depth chart. Zappe doesn’t matter to me: the role does. If Brissett goes down, I don’t want Maye out there. Send out the vet backup and let him take the hits. I don’t want Milton out there either, but for different reasons: he isn’t ready, and as competitive as Maye is, he will not take Milton starting over him well.

Nah play him. There's nothing about our offense he hasn't dealt with before in college like a subpar OL.

What is the reward? He gets experience running for his life from bigger, stronger, faster players? The risks (moving backwards on form/footwork, injury, making him gun shy so he doesn’t process properly, etc.) seem pointless. Let him develop for a year. I don’t see any point in throwing him out there until they are confident in his development and the OL is at least average. All I see are downsides.

I'd rather he be swaddled in cotton balls this season than being thrown to the wolves...

thats what Brisket and Zappe are for... takin' lumps and thumps

Kliff Kingsbury I/R Special OR we cut/trade Zappe.

MAYE SITS OUT UNTIL AFTER THE BYE
If the plan is to have Maye sit out until after the bye, then we should keep Zappe or sign another veteran backup. Cutting Zappe and having Maye #3 until the break would mean that Milton would be the first off the bench if Brissett is injured. I don't that the team is ready for Milton to have that much playtime, even if they were to immediately sign a veteran if Brissette is injured.

First off the bench until the bye is a role for a veteran quarterback.

PLAN FOR MAYE TO COME IN FOR GAME 5 or 6 IF BRISSETT STAYS HEALTHY
Now, I think that Zappe could be kept until the final cut in case Brissett is injured and then deal with any Brissette injury in Games 1-4. Milton could be the #2 for those games, expecting to lose if he comes in. Maye could be the #2 with a very limited game plan, with a veteran immediately signed for a few games if Brissett is injured. Also, our PS quarterback could be that #2 if Brissett is injured.

Of course, a Brissette injury could cause the team to start Maye in say Game 3 instead of waiting until Game 5 or 6.

Cut zappe and bring him back on PS with add on bonus. Doubt anyone will claim him if cut.

I've said the same thing but in an opposite way: If Zappe isn't good enough to be QB#2 then Wolfe and Mayo have made a big mistake in not releasing him and getting someone who can be a "veteran backup QB".

MY PERSONNEL GUESS IS
1) that the team plans for Maye to be ready to play for Game 5 or 6 or even earlier if there is an injury.
2) I expect Zappe to NOT make the 53 unless Bissett is not able to start Game One.
3) Who will be our 3rd stringer, and perhaps #2 for 2-3 games depends on Milton. I could see him as #2 for a2-3 games. I do expect him to make the 53-man roster as a prospect to be the 2025 backup.
4) After the cut to 3 QB's, we can decide whether to sign a 4th or whether or Practice Squad QB or Milton is good enough to be #2 for a game or two,
