I don’t think Cam is really the mentor type if he isn't the starter but in general there is a lot to be gained from a young QB sitting in the QB room or together on the practice field with a veteran. When the guy you're learning from is in the trenches with you day in day out you can pick up insight a coach may not be able to give. Overall yes, coaching is a much bigger piece of the puzzle but I would say a substantial amount can be learned from a veteran who is willing to pass on knowledge to a rookie. The comment was saying that sitting Mac would be a waste because people think there's nothing good to learn from Cam.
Coaches coach. Sure, players share info, but, by far, the main source of instruction will be coming from the coaches. The point of sitting Mac is so he can develop good habits instead of bad ones due to being thrust into the starting position before he's ready.
Cam has next to nothing to do with Mac's development.
