Mike Lombardi: "Be Patient with Mac Jones" (no need to rush)

The comment was saying that sitting Mac would be a waste because people think there's nothing good to learn from Cam.

Coaches coach. Sure, players share info, but, by far, the main source of instruction will be coming from the coaches. The point of sitting Mac is so he can develop good habits instead of bad ones due to being thrust into the starting position before he's ready.

Cam has next to nothing to do with Mac's development.
I don’t think Cam is really the mentor type if he isn't the starter but in general there is a lot to be gained from a young QB sitting in the QB room or together on the practice field with a veteran. When the guy you're learning from is in the trenches with you day in day out you can pick up insight a coach may not be able to give. Overall yes, coaching is a much bigger piece of the puzzle but I would say a substantial amount can be learned from a veteran who is willing to pass on knowledge to a rookie.

Not saying you're wrong, because we've never really seen him in that position. But everything we've seen in practice, the games, and in heard from him in interviews, he sounds really supportive of Mac. Now, that could all be really easy for him to say since he's still the projected starter at this point, and once the reality set in that he was on the bench, maybe his tune changes. But for now I think he's done and said everything right, enough for me to give him the benefit of the doubt there.

Mac Jones will get his chance. whether due to injury, covid, or performance from Cam, or just waiting out the year.

if he doesnt this year, it only means that Cam Newton has had an amazing season which is good for us also.

I agree with your post. Can't hold something against him that he hasn't even done yet. Maybe he surprises me and he is willing to mentor Mac even if Mac ends up the starter.

Winning the division and hopefully winning a game or two in the playoffs should be the goals for the season, and I think Belichick will make his QB decisions based on those goals. I seriously doubt he will stick with Newton simply to allow Jones to sit for a year. Newton played much better last night, and I expect him to start week 1, but he won’t stick with Newton if they start losing games and he sucks.

Judon has been playing like a beast. I'm still wary after other big splash LB signings in Adalius Thomas and Colvin didn't really pan out, but very excited for Judon if he can stay healthy all year.

Disagree

I believe it was reported Cam was giving maC fashion advice:

"Lesson number one my Mac 'n Cheese...... when putting outfits together, always accessorize.
When I'm in a Jackie O mood. I always feature a flamboyant Channel silk scarf and androgynous Versace shades to compliment my ensemble"

Start Cam games 1-3 and then assess with the intention to start Mac if Cam is not up to snuff.

If Cam is playing well, he finishes the season (barring injury)

Mac's team moving forward after that
Maybe after 2 or 4 games. Do you really want Jones' first game to be Brady's return to Gillette????

I understand the need to be patient with Mac. I get that it might hurt his confidence is he started, fell short, and then was replaced by Cam. Having said that, he's making it difficult to be patient. He's been amazing. Can you imagine what his stats would be if his WRs could catch a perfect thrown deep ball or 2 pt conversion? Loving this kid!

2007 was a great year for Adalius…then he drifted. Rosie Colvin was always game for a big play.
I would be OK if Judon was able to bring more consistency than them, but would not call him a bust if he didn’t make the Patriots Hall of Fame.

Judon looks really great. Hope he stays durable and healthy. He looks great.

Adalius Thomas was also pretty good in 2008 before he got hurt. Then he flamed out big-time. In the end I think Thomas' tenure here was clouded by how it ended and the missed 19-0 season. If the D managed to hold off the Giants he could have been in the mix for Super Bowl MVP.

Sure why not? Does that scare you?

Mac won't be scared. I think Mac is a competitive killer and a super nerd on the playbook, this kid will be good. Just don't get the rush to throw him to the wolves already. Brady himself said his body wasn't physically ready until his second year. This kid could be good for 15 years if he doesn't get screwed up by some short sighted thinking from media, and fans.
