Midseason Thoughts on Chad Ryland So Far

Of course now it looks like the bad move, but I can’t remember many posters here being upset in the offseason that we replaced Folk with a rookie.

Everytime I see our kicker with goofy ass jersey number 37, it just feels wrong.

Start over next year and get a guy who will choose a single digit number like any other respectable kicker.

It's way too early to give up on Ryland.

I think Ryland can blossom. he was taken for the next 3-5 years, not for this year only.

Agreed. I loved Folk, but he's on his last leg (cough, cough). If we had a shot at the Super Bowl, it's different. This is a good season for a kicker to develop (although we're rarely in position to kick a field goal). We know kickers are a strange breed. He's got the leg. We can afford to be patient. If he does pan out, we're set for a decade.

Chad Ryland is kicking 70% FG this year. His whole season has been a struggle session.

In comparison Nick Folk made 86% of his kicks for the Patriots last season.

And for reference in 2023, Folk has been on fire making 21 of 22 kicks for the Titans for a 95% FG accuracy and made all of his PATs as a bonus.

This decision by BB looks almost as bad as replacing Jakobi Meyers with JSS.

What a WASTE of a pick! We could have bundled that 4th rounder with something else to move up for an OT to help the offense.

Instead BB replaces a kicker that didn't need replacing with someone even WORSE!

except they brought in 2 punters, two......and Baringer has been solid......they are kicking the tires, doing due diligence.......Ryland is kicking like a rookie, his kickoffs have been fine.....not reading into it this much

Nick Folk is kicking 95% on his FGs this year. That could make a difference in close games.

What's even worse is BB wasting draft picks on an even worse kicker when he didn't need to and could have helped another area of the team instead.

A 4th rounder at that. Could have just kept big kick nick and got a guy next season. Just another blunder on top of blunders.. but I'm embracing it all.. this is what it takes for the organization to make serious changes.

Seriously the fact that we drafted a kicker in round 5 who was very likely to go completely undrafted and then had to deal with off field controversy for him to never play is such a late term Belichick move it hurts. Also the fact that afterwards nobody else in the league found him remotely worth taking a look at...

Not Special Teams coach Cam Achord
Not any of the fleet of overpaid gunners and ST specialists who are tasked with tackling kick returners

Note: Nick Folk and Tennessee have given up 0 kickoff return TDs this season (same as NE)

Note 2.0: Tennessee has allowed 5th most kickoff returns (19) while NE has allowed (12) in 2023
