Message To All The McCourty Haters

Paul Perillo from Patriots website was asked about McCourty and this was his reply

"McCourty is struggling, there’s no question about it. He’s been beaten often on deep balls down the sideline as well as crossing routes over the middle. His interference penalties have come on plays in which he’s been badly beaten and racing to catch up. That’s why he hasn’t been looking back for the ball. So, until he can figure out how to keep his man in front of him I wouldn’t expect to see his head looking back for the ball. It’s hard to do that when you are chasing."

That is a good point. If you're trying to catch up then you're not in position to turn your head.
Yeah, I've seen that brought up elsewhere. It seems that McCourty's problem isn't even knowing when to turn his head. It actually starts much sooner than that. He's not getting good jams at the line of scrimmage, and he can't recover from those failed jams, putting him behind the WR and playing catchup.

I spoke to Jerod Mayo about this last week. This video may help folks understand when and why a defender in coverage is unable to turn around to see the ball.

The end zone play Sunday was an instance where McCourty should have jumped and turned as opposed to jumping to disrupt the arrival of the ball. The receiver was out of space.

This has been explained to folks here numerous times now. Besides, Mayo is a LB, what does he know. The trouble is message board posters don't care... They don't want to discuss coverage scheme or coaching technique. They just want them all to turn around and INT that ball... Passes defensed don't count either because they could have easily been INTS instead if the DB just got his head around...;)

lol on the bold part.

well said.

Poor McCourty, hope he's not reading what the press and the fans say and instead focuses on what BB and his coaches say.

McCourty was not playing catch-up on the play in the EZ in which he was called for PI.
He was already in front of the WR, within arm's reach. He simply didn't...turn...around.
What the hell was he waiting for? They're in the EZ, so the ball has to be on its way now.
It's ridiculous how often this has happened.

They are in the end zone so the ball has to be on it's way now... that is just ridiculous. Antonio Cromartie last year let in a touchdown to Deon branch because he turned his head in the end zone lost site of the receiver and branch uncovered and had an easy TD.

You heard Cromartie say after the game that he should never have taken his eyes off the reciever in the end zone. This talk is ridiculous the thing Devin did wrong is make contact with the WR that is all and deservedly got a PI people need to chill out.

a lot of Pats fans remember Ty Law and the big plays he made...they forget the times he got burned and beat for scores because of the Pats success. I remember the exact same things being said about Ty between the Bill and BB years...."he takes too many chances!!he goes for the INT instead of playing the man!!!"...same horse, different color... It's a nice sentiment..."people should chill.." ..but in this day and age, the Blame Generation needs targets...a constant and always replenishing supply.

McCourty gets beat....uh...guess what...even Revis gets beat...this is a team game not an individual competition.
