On TV today Willie was saying he thinks Gronk will start the season retired but that he may change his mind and come back late in the season.

I wouldn't mind that since it will give him a chance to rest his body, but...it leaves us shorthanded until the end of the season. I just hope he makes his decision BEFORE the draft.

Probably going to take a TE, anyway. It may be better for them to keep it on the hush until after the draft.

It sure seems like the earlier he decides, the better for the Pats. His return near the playoffs, sounds a little checkered.

I dont think it matters. BB most certainly has a deadline set either internally or even communicated it to Rosenhaus. If Gronk doesn't decide anything until then they will operate under the assumption that he wants to retire and he can kiss any added money to his contract goodbye.

OK so if that is what Gronk wants to do then he will be released. We get $9m back on the cap and the roster spot.

    -OR-

He his deal is re done, put on IR-DTR for vet minimum and bonuses are issued for games and snaps.

I think the Pats would be interested in Gronk returning a la Junior Seau.

Seems silly to have let Dwayne Allen go to the Dolphins for only $3.5 million per year

Would have easily re-signed him at that number given how much he helps our running game

I revised my post with another option. IR him with the DTR, redu his deal for the vet minimum and bonuses for snaps and games active

They'd just put him on the reserved/retired list

Yea. Best route. What about cap? I don't think that goes away until 2020

When Bitch Mode pulled his retirement shtick the Hawks retained his rights without a cap hit but when he wanted to come back they didn't have the cap space to pay him. It would be the same with Gronk, the prorated cap hit would kick in when he returned.

This is all a negotiation game and not one that Bill Belichick has control over. If he did, Gronkowski would have been traded last offseason.

This is Brady’s call as I expect any concessions he makes on his inevitable extension would directly go to enriching Gronk’s and Edelman’s contracts. I can see Gronk staying “retired” through the offseason workouts and the opening of training camp, but I’m thinking his contract will be sweetened in time for him to be available when the season starts.

One thing I had forgotten until reminded of it by a column in the “Boston Sports Journal” is the Brady’s contract can’t be redone until sometime in August. Per the CBA, a player’s salary cap figure can’t be reduced twice in the same calendar year. Last August Brady’s contract was tweaked with his cap figure lowered to offset the $5 million of LTBE incentives added but not earned. Because of this, Brady’s extension can’t be filed until August if it lowers his $27 million cap figure which it will.

Well no, under this “plan” he would retire and then later ask to come back and play.

You can’t release a guy who retires.

You can’t put a guy on IR who retires. (Or also who isn’t injured)

That can’t be done. You can’t IR a player who retires. And how do you expect them to get him to redo his contract for the minimum, again when he is retired.

Pay him his full salary and PUP him. He'll need to hold his end of the bargain and play December to February (with a three week practice window in November). I don't want to nickel and dime the guy. We draft his replacement in the meantime (if one is available).

Where does the CBA say that? I know it says you can't increase a salary twice in twelve months:

As a case in point: Amendola took pay cuts in May 2016 and April 2017.
