McCourty

Maybe so. However, I don't think moving on from a guy who was "mostly fine", until he wasn't in the playoff game at least, would have been an egregious violation of "a year too early."
Point is they couldn't have gotten rid of him because of his 2021 cap hit and the new players in the secondary.

Overall I thought DMC was slow to react on a number of plays this year- especially ones in which he was in run support.

Coverage-wise he seemed ok.

What McCourty brings on the field at this point is replaceable with better talent at lower the cost.
You can say that about everyone.

DMC was not a complete disaster. He might have worn down a little or perhaps was injured. IDK

Would I offer him 11m AAV again to return? Nope- not at 35yo

$1yr 5m? Maybe.

2 games zero punts.

The Pats need a younger faster defense. McCourty has been eating up cap space for years, and he will continue to do so even when he isn’t in the team.

then I guess that you would have $6.5M of cap money PLUS the cap for McCourty's replacement.

Correct. That's sunk cost regardless.

It's either him for $5m of someone else who may not be as good

The open question is whether McCourty wants to retire.

If he wants to play, we should definitely extend his contract. Instead of having to sign another safety and pay the cap cost, McCourty would likely cost about the same as he will if he leaves ($6.45M). ZERO cap cost is a bargain.

I strongly believe that a deal can be made if McCourty wants to play.
It's unlikely that the Patriots are going to give McCourty a $4M/yr contract. They're more likely to give him a vet minimum deal that will just push the $4M back a year, saving them about 3M on this year's cap.

It's either him at a cost that pushes the two years of proration back to 2023 or it's a lesser replacement PLUS the 6.45M

Yea. I think they need to play it out.

Yea. I think they need to play it out.
I think that they could put in some NLTBE escalators that would allow McCourty a chance to make more than the minimum, but even the minimum for him is 1.1M or so.. That would reduce the hit from 6.45 to 3.35M or so.. And that's much needed money. I just don't know if DMac would do that...

Its just a thought but.....

How about putting Jalen Mills at the deep safety spot. He showed he had CB speed, but although he improved at CB over the course of the season, he DID come to us with the idea that safety was his ideal position.
I thought Mills was usually a CB who covered slot receivers, last year he played out of position most of the time...

When the Pats signed Mills, my first thought was that they had him pegged to take over for McCourty eventually with a similar track. 1 year at CB, then move him to deep safety. I still think that Mills best spot would be at Free Safety.

McCourty's situation is tough. To re-sign him, the Pats need him to take a near minimum deal to help free up cap space. Otherwise, they're looking at a 6.45 Million hit PLUS the salary of whomever replaces McCourty.

I agree with the near minimum deal 100 percent. Makes sense for us and mccourty. Based on his play last season, the days of mccourty commanding a huge contract are over.

sure you do

There is no way that team asks hm to play for minimum pay, and no way that he would accept that.

There won’t be a huge market for McCourty.

I don't understand how everyone can say that the defense is too old and slow, then say they ought to keep guys like DMC.
On the contrary, many on this board would suggest they don’t need any improvement based on their “ranking”.

I don't understand how everyone can say that the defense is too old and slow, then say they ought to keep guys like DMC. My theory is that BB likes DMC b/c Brian Belichick doesn't have the respect of the other DBs on the team, so a guy like DMC is needed to keep the room in order. If that's the case, make him the safeties coach, and replace him with someone younger and faster. Brian can go coach at Wesleyan or Foxborough HS.
You will Eat Those Words when Johnny Foxboro becomes our QB of the future and Brian B our OC!

With all the great things bb had going for him, why did he have to ruin it by not getting a vasectomy when he was 12 years old?

I love DMac, but I am not on board with him being paid near at the top of the market..... gonna come down to dollars for me, IMO. He has at best 3 more seasons of high level play...I'd go year to year with him with a respectable contract....

Is anyone OK with him being paid at the top of the market?

Obviously, McCourty is past his prime, and still worth a contract for a solid veteran.

I would point out that some here expect him to play for the vet minimum.
