Maye must play

Yeah, this was more like our preseason oline lineup. The one we all know is terrible. The normal line is at least functional. But we need to see how bad the injuries are before we can get back to a functional line.

I would prefer Maye not get killed by a bad line, but that might result in him never playing this season.
I'm thinking that internally the coaching staff are going to evaluate the last 3 games during the mini Bye-week.

Brissett we know he's a tough guy and kudos to him for hanging in there taking hits. The line is in dissary primarily due injuries. If Drake starts next week the decision will gave been a collaborative one.

Yeah, it’ll be interesting to see what they do. At this point, I would not say it’s guaranteed they start Maye based on the mop up duty last night.

I continue to believe that Maye should play but on a very limited pitch count of sorts. Instead of pitches, I'm thinking hits (sacks, hits, hard tackles during a run). Whether it's starting or end of the game, starting is probably significantly better, as it allows him to maximize playing time with a game plan tailored to him, yet being mindful of the potential cumulative beatings. However, it'd be a weird preseason dynamic that NFL fans just wouldn't accept. Taking Maye out with a lead would be sacrilege and lead to torches and pitchforks if they end up losing the game.

Maye was injured for half the season last year, so he's far from indestructible. Safe play for playing time would be to continue to send him out during garbage time (where there isn't a threat to constantly pass from the Pats). Kid had at least 4 hard hits (2 sacks, a body slam during a run, a lower body grab) last night in just 11 or 12 dropbacks.

People say that but the most sacked QB's in history got hurt no more than the average QB, even before they had all this protection for QB's. I think the injury issue is overrated. But also agree they need the starting 5 back to have a good passing game so I get waiting also. He's still, IMO, going to give you more chance to make plays the Jacoby. Risk/Reward is tough on this one, I'm OK waiting a bit, OK if he plays sooner but see both sides.
Pressures and hits after thrown balls should also be considered. I don't think the injury issue is overrated.

From Mayo's seemingly non committal tone.. it seems like every thing will be evaluated. It really seemed like he was really surprised about his defense. They seemed like they didn't want to be there.

The defense is allowed a bad game. They better respond in San Fran or this season is going to be really looooooooong.

Mayo just now said Jacoby is the starting QB. So Maye isn't starting next week or I don't think even the week after. Buckle up people you aren't going to see Maye starting for a long time. They aren't stupid like the media. This isn't about personal gratification, if it was Maye wouldn't even be here. No it's about the best long term outlook for the team.

The book is out. Teams are beating us rushing 4.. I totally get it the dissary guys playing out of position and then it's just being physically beat.

You'd have to think could a more talented passer make a difference? I believe so. The offense of AVP is called upon the QB'S strengths within the scheme.

I'm firmly starting to feel that with a week of preparation, game planning around drakes ability even with the line issue would likely be better overall. He came in the 4th quarter for mop up duty.

Brissett is tough guy I'll give him that. However I don't think we are going to be competitive on offense with him at qb.

I definitely think a better qb would have helped against Seattle and cincy. Last night? Very hard to say. Maye did have them in position for a td on his only drive and it didn’t look like nyj was holding up. But it took i think 3 4th down conversions to get down there where we normally would have kicked a fg or punted. I still think he would’ve been sacked around 7 times had he played the whole game, just can’t let that happen to a rookie on a weekly basis.

Its so tempting when you see the offense did open up a little there but i still want to see improvement first. Will be interesting to see in sf if we get some guys back playing where they should be.

Agree there. Watching the offense after they started to get some momentum on the FG drive.. then getting past the 50 and continuing to get holding calls to back them up. It was just a bad night for the entire team. Brissett had 98 yards passing. Seems like the passing production is worse than Last season. It's very tempting as you say. But I guess it would ultimately be the right thing to have the future wait until we get better O line play.

I don't even blame the defense. They were on the field for 40 minutes. There wasn't a lot of time to regroup on the sideline. They are going to be so banged up and gassed by midseason...

Yeah. I mean I hate to say it, but this is the kind of season when you find out who are the fighters and who take the year off.

I understand the thinking, I just don't think this is a pragmatic approach. It would send a bad message to the rest of the team and interferes with establishing Maye's as the team leader on a losing team. The leadership part is hard, especially if the rest of the team views him as a prima donna.

Happy to see Mayo squash the start Maye noise right away. I look at yesterday as nothing more than putting the backup in when the game is done.
