Maye must play

I think they're not clear about it because they don't want defenses to know either. Why let your opponents in a few weeks know that they should be planning for Drake Maye and not Jacoby Brissett? They also kind of put Jacoby in a bad spot if they put a definitive date out there in advance because then he is a lame duck.

I agree with you, though - they're not at that "point of no return" yet, but a bad loss to the Jets tonight might push them into using the mini-bye before the Niners game to get Drake ready. However, a good showing could alternatively buy them more time and let them push things out an additional week to get back home for the Miami game. If they did want to wait longer, the next most sensible time is probably week 8, but five more games with Brissett feels untenable right now.
I think they have a plan when to start him and no matter what they're not going to deviate from that plan.

Drake Maye not starting Week 1 has got to be the most idiotic decision this franchise has ever made.

People say they don’t want Maye to learn bad habits with a terrible offense, but what exactly is the end game here? The offense is going to suck the rest of the year, and there’s a good chance the offense will suck next year too. Do we just not play him indefinitely then?

We want Maye to sit on the sideline and learn from…Jacoby Brissett? How does that make sense to anyone?

Why are we the only team not starting a Top 5-drafted QB in recent memory (Trey Lance aside…and God help us if we end up like that situation)?

This whole decision to sit Maye just reeks of a bunch of idiots saying to themselves “Hey, look at me…look how smart I am.”

I’ll say it.

I’m beginning to wonder of trading back and fortifying the line in the draft might have been the better play.

Legit concerned that we might watch ANOTHER game 1st rd QB get ruined before our eyes.

Gonna get that kid killed behind this horrific OL.

Don't play him... simple.

Also they could have signed better free agents and drafted a tackle in the 2nd and had a good line this year along with Maye.

Wolf screwed the pooch on the O-Line.

They can't play him until the line is something that doesn't resemble tissue paper.

The line isn’t going to change significantly this year, and they’re going to play him this year.

They’ll get Sow and Strange back, but otherwise the rest of the line is what it is. The only boost I can think of is putting Onwenu back at guard and finding some other solution at RT. I am not sure what that solution is though. DJ Humphries signing if he’s healthy? Give Donovan Smith a look? Don’t know.

I don't know if this was the plan, but I like the way they eased him in. Let him watch a couple games. Let him get some experience in garbage time last night. Give him 10 days to prepare to be the starter (maybe). At this point, just let him learn by playing. It's not like we have a season to salvage. Let's see what he can do.

Yeah, I think this is a good time. Obviously the defense he’s facing is very good, but the 49ers will be missing pieces offensively so hopefully the NE defense can limit things a little and keep the game somewhat manageable. He will have 10 days to prepare and be fully ready. Even if it’s a tough game for him, it’s still a learning experience.

Then he gets to play at home the following two weeks(vs Miami, Houston), then a neutral site game in Jacksonville, then another home game against the Jets (repeat opponent, so some familiarity). So not much dealing with hostile territory.

Then the home slate is over, but the following five games are not too challenging - at TEN, at CHI, home vs LAR, at MIA, and home vs IND. All winnable games for the kid who should be fairly comfortable at that point.

Then a bye week, where he will prep for a tougher final stretch - at ARI, at BUF, home vs LAC and home vs BUF.

The other rookie QB's, to paraphrase, kind of sucked as prospects, other than Williams who was Meh.
Maye is most comparable to Herbert as a prospect, what any other rookie QB doesn't really relate to Maye.

My biggest concern with starting Maye is he's going to win you some games. But he can't win you the Super Bowl with this team this year. I believe he is great, not good, great. I'd like to watch it, but him playing is a detriment of the draft pick, how many games do I want to see him? It's a quandary for me. He should play 8 minimum for maximum development heading into next year, though 4 is probably enough for a guy like him. I can't see them waiting that long.

The Patriots brass is going to get all this credit when he outplays the other rookies this year when he plays. But, based on what I saw in college, that would be the case if Maye played day 1.

I am totally convinced they'd be 2-0 right now if Maye started over Jacoby, would that be a good thing for a rebuild year?
SOMEONE is going to have to play. Brissett won’t last physically.

Definitely rethinking week 5 right now after that showing last night. The first 2 weeks were not good but I don’t think they were bad to the point where id be afraid to put a qb in. Last night was! This was historically bad qb protection from anything ive personally seen. 2015 was a long time ago for memory purposes but even that afcc might not have been as bad.

Lets see in sf if we can get lowe and sow back and have more guys back in their natural positions. Hopefully it can at least get back to the level of the first couple weeks. My fear is the jets may have exposed something with the OL based off what they saw in the first 2 games and its just gonna be open season on our qb and rbs now.

They need the starting 5 back, the Jest took advantage of the rookies and 1 stupid play by Onwenu.

Yeah, this was more like our preseason oline lineup. The one we all know is terrible. The normal line is at least functional. But we need to see how bad the injuries are before we can get back to a functional line.

I would prefer Maye not get killed by a bad line, but that might result in him never playing this season.

People say that but the most sacked QB's in history got hurt no more than the average QB, even before they had all this protection for QB's. I think the injury issue is overrated. But also agree they need the starting 5 back to have a good passing game so I get waiting also. He's still, IMO, going to give you more chance to make plays the Jacoby. Risk/Reward is tough on this one, I'm OK waiting a bit, OK if he plays sooner but see both sides.

And not playing him might avoid a career ending injury behind an all-time bad OL...

But that doesn't matter because Joe Milton's better! Let's play him. Look at that arm. Play Joe!

The book is out. Teams are beating us rushing 4.. I totally get it the dissary guys playing out of position and then it's just being physically beat.

You'd have to think could a more talented passer make a difference? I believe so. The offense of AVP is called upon the QB'S strengths within the scheme.

I'm firmly starting to feel that with a week of preparation, game planning around drakes ability even with the line issue would likely be better overall. He came in the 4th quarter for mop up duty.

Brissett is tough guy I'll give him that. However I don't think we are going to be competitive on offense with him at qb.

Right. I can get behind that argument if they decide to go that way. I was of the mindset that the oline was going to sink our season and we need to be looking toward the next offseason. But that first game and a half gave us a false sense that we could compete this year. Right now, it’s all about progression in the young players and the coaches to see who should still be here next year.
