Interestingly cannot find confirmation that he was hired by Detroit.. all I can find are stories that say, "Detroit is expected to hire...." or "All signs pointing to Matt P becoming coach of the Detroit..."

I does seem to be a done deal, best of luck to Matt, he has served his apprenticeship and is ready to assume this role.. it starts with a decent QB and other things will fall in place..

I mean, if you were looking for a new HC, who would you pick? I'd go for the defensive mastermind who's collaborated with Bill Belichick to revive the dynasty too.

Patricia's role in bringing the Patriots back from talented also-rans in the 06-13 years, to world champions, should not be underestimated. Godspeed big guy.

That's probably what happened, and the "other candidates" leaked it to the press.

Its not fair, practical, or really possible to have people "keep it quiet." First, there are spouses, who will tell family, and have little signs of things show up on social media even if they aren't intentional. Then there are the other candidates, who need to let other teams know they are still available. Then there is the Lion's front office, which will need to start making plans as soon as possible. And they don't want their players and assistants and other staff to hear about it through "leaks." Then there is the front office of other teams, which are having meetings every day about the various candidates and what's being said. Plus Matty P. needs to be able to start talking to people about being his coordinators (Detroit doesn't want to be put at a three week disadvantage on this.)

All it takes is one leak from any of these sources and everyone else will hear about it in a manner that is confusing or upsetting.

The only practical way to do it is to be transparent, announce it and let everyone deal with it that way.
