Martellus Bennett : [UPDATE: Placed on IR]

Not open for further replies.
He wanted to have surgery to be ready for next season when AR is back. Team doctor said his injury was manageable. He did not see why he should sacrifice his body for a meaningless season. Team thinks having him there give them a chance to win. Situation got ugly and here we are.
There is a time for everything. A time to attack and a time to retreat. People will call him a rat and a quitter, but I see him as being smart for recognizing the situation for what it was. Greenbay as currently constructed may not even beat the Browns. Why play for such a team when you are not healthy?

Basically this. Bennett seems to have forced himself out of what became a bad work situation after Rodgers went down into a much better one. The only surprise is that nobody else claimed him before the Patriots, but it's also possible that he would have refused to play for all but a handful of teams and opted for surgery and made that clear when contacted.

I don't have a problem with players using loopholes to leverage themselves into better situations. God knows players have little leverage as it is.

Again, there is a difference in having 0% chance mathmatically and having 0% chance inside some fans' head.

If Brady went down, you wouldnt give up on the season, because we could win if other factors rise up. Same can be said to other teams. Its a lot harder and very unlikely, but it's not impossible

I think people are defending MB because he ended up here. If that wasnt the case i dont think there would be this amount of support for him.

I dont think MB is completely innocent and got screwed in GB. IMO he gave up on them, plain and simple, because AR went down, not because he wanted surgery and his doctor didnt.
Marty played injured here most of last season without Gronk....that is what I know and what I care about.

Reiss usually doesn't drop a take without some insider knowledge. He's convinced we are going to get the 2016 version of Bennett as a contributor.

What a steal if that's true.

Might be in the minority, but Bennett was not that effective last year after the injury. With a bad shoulder now, my expectations are low...but higher than that of Allen, so I guess it's an upgrade.

Marty will play injured if he cares and it makes sense. When Rodgers got hurt, it made little sense to him to want to continue to play for the packers. That’s why he wanted to get the surgery. Now he’s with the GOAT, so the surgery can wait.

Probably some truth to that. The prevailing opinion is very likely right: with significantly diminished chances for victory he wasn't willing to make the sacrifice. Whether it's quitting on the team, smart MB move, combination of both, something else, whether it's right or wrong? GB cut him and we signed him. Both GB and MB should move onto a different talking subject. IMHO nothing good will come from either continuing public discussion on it.

How many teams has MB played for over his 10 year career? 5 or 6? History of '100% team first' isn't exactly the scouting report on MB in his tenure at these places. So for GB and the Patriots or any other team this is what you get with MB. And if TB gets hurt or the team just starts playing like crap I'd say fair chance MB will act as he has. If a team is concerned with this then don't sign him.

IF MB can be MB 2016 then we scored! Call it a faustian bargain if needed but however you term it, it is what it is. And if for whatever reason he decides it ain't worth it with the Patriots this year, no one should be shocked. It's part of the deal with MB though he is hardly the only player that has a complicated risk/reward equation.

All due respect, Since you are unaware of the real facts your opinion is really useless.
I mean what good is an opinion based on not knowing the real information and guessing at it IN ORDER TO form an opinion?

Here's the thing.

We have too be honest about Marty's actions in this situation. According to his own post, he felt it was in his best interests to undergo surgery up in GB before his release. I perfectly understand why he felt this way. Why go through the risk and pain to play in GB when your team is doomed to start with. With the Pats there is at least a reason to put up with the pain during the week and the shots during the game, just like he did last year.

I don't think Bennett would be practicing right now if the Niners had claimed him. And I have to say neither would I. He a guy who is a the end of a decent career, who already has a life after football. So I can see why his move would look selfish against the team first image we'd all like to think our players represent. And if I were a Packer fan, I'd be pissed to see him getting ready to play for the Pats this week.

But the fact is we are not Packer fans. Our QB is not on IR, and there is a reason for Bennett to endure the pain and risk it will entail for him to play for us for the next 8-11 games.

BTW- I hope he plays this week, but I will be surprised if he does.

He did say that when the team is losing he starts to look out for himself in that 30 for 30 documentary. I can't blame him if he's injured. Playing thru injuries is never a good idea for ones long term health. Got to have a good reason, like championships. Realistically. With the way the Packers D has been for years, Do we think Hundley would be able to carry and lead them to a Super Bowl Victory? Nah I don't think so. So I'd opt for surgery as well.

I think Marty B's gripe with the Packers is the failure to disclose designation. Sounds like he told them, and has proof of it, that he was having issues with his shoulder.

I’m not sure why we care about Bennett being a selfish player when he is on a losing team.
He had proven he is not when he is ina winning team and this is a winning team.
I’m fine with a player who would give 100% if a patriot and less than 100% elsewhere being a patriot.

Quite honestly I dont even see how he is the only selfish party in the entire GB situation. They cut him to avoid having to IR him / pay injury settlement. It was one big game of injury chicken between both sides.

This is awesome if true. Packers fans and other fan bases are going to be so salty! So delicious!

What's the deal with sites being upset with people using incognito mode? They don't like that they can't spy on us? wtf!

Maybe the choice about playing with the injury is as simple as:

1. knowing from first hand experience that the GOAT throws the ball so you don't get your bell rung/hurt shoulder tore off.

2. knowing from first hand experience that A-Rod was likely to get him hurt, and QB2 likely to get him killed; so take the surgery option stage left.

Just a thought for our cheesehead friends (do. we have any?).

Honestly I kind of find it funny. I like when a player has and uses the upper hand. (Not when its used on us....i know, hypocrite but hey i am what i am)
Be waaay funnier if he goes something like 5 for 85 and 2 tds lol
With some vicious blocks scattered throughout the night.
