Martellus Bennett : [UPDATE: Placed on IR]

And then he also, somehow, used this Jedi Mind Trick to cause roughly 28 other teams with higher waiver priority to decide not to claim him?

Slighty off topic, but where does one find the Waiver priority list. Does anyone got an official link?

Reiss says he's going to Denver - might play.

The Patriots have intrigue as the TE2 position, because of the historical fragility of the guy in the TE1 position, so.....

They've kept Allen, so far, and that's really what we should be looking at in this equation, IMO.

  • Expecting him to eventually grasp the playbook, and looking to either the end of the season or next year?
  • Insurance against Bennett not being able to make it?
  • Opting to use him as the blocker and Bennett mostly as the pure receiving TE?
  • Just not willing to take the hit on Allen being a bust?
  • All of the above and/or something completely different?

IMO those three plus:

  • A third blocking TE for redzone
  • 2nd Blocking TE in case we lose one
I also want to point out that he did go out for passes in the ATL game, he just was not targeted IIRC. It might be hard for us to evaluate how much he is or is not improving in the passing game.

So you’re alleging that Belichick somehow used psychic powers to coerce Green Bay to release a player that they did not have to? And in fact, could possibly face sanctions to doing so? And then he also, somehow, used this Jedi Mind Trick to cause roughly 28 other teams with higher waiver priority to decide not to claim him?

That’s some next-level conspiracy stuff.

UNBELIEVER.

BB: Come to the Dark Side Ross.

"So Bill was all like "very well then if you will not be turned..." and I'm like hold up there Bill I didn't say all that..."

So wait a minute. Marty is claiming on one hand he wanted to get surgery and the packers pressured him to play...

Yet on the other hand now with the pats he will play and forgo surgery?

Im glad marty is back but something doesnt seem right here

Read @Vindicate 's last post- I thought he explained it rather well....

From the same headshed of MENSA candidates and Nobel hopefuls that brought you the Fog Conspiracy...

I could see him ending up on IR sooner than later but perhaps returning in 2018.

I could also see him playing the year out. Packers fans are infuriated by the fact that he's even practicing, and it makes some sense I guess. A ton of Packers players from the past and present have come out in support of this doctor which seems genuine, so I don't know what to make of it. I don't like to call people liars just because the person they're accusing has a good record.

Completely agree. I was reading the story with Marty's long online posting and I kept thinking: he keeps saying it's F'd up and he needs surgery. Sp how is he practicing and might play in Denver? Why is BB even going to play him when it sounds like his shoulder is one hard tackle from being non functional?
It just doesn't add up. My best guess is with MB and GB having a major falling out, GB has been/is posturing to get some money back. This story from MB is the returner's serve posturing to keep that money. Just the unseemly underside of the money side of football playing out a bit publicly. If it isn't that then either (A) MB just played BB. MB's going to collect a 1million(?) 2017 paycheck while he recuperates from surgery or (B) surgery isn't as needed as MB claims, and MB is aware that BB is going to use him the rest of this season with a very specific and limited snap count (one that MB has a comfort level with). I also assume MB wants to be on a winner (something quite understandable from a competitor).

IMHO MB should take a page out of the BB playbook and say no more about GB or the injury. If he can get out there in some games, make a few impact catches, assist the Patriots into the highlights and playoffs, his ugly divorce from GB will be a distant memory (being a winner is an amazing fixer of many things). And as far as money and GB, let his/NFLPA's lawyers sort that out. MB can take solace in the fact that it is never easy to get money back

People say Marty didn't play well this year but at this point in the season he has half as many catches as he had all of last season. So he is on pace for the same number of catches, He just don't have the tds.

As for why he is practicing now and not in Gb. I have been to Gb. Boston is a great city. A lot of miracles happen here.

I'm not sure what to expect of him now that we know he has a torn rotator.
True. His blocking ability must be compromised. (?)

Packers signed someone to 3 years, who discloses shoulder pain every week. They tell him to play through it, as it is manageable and it becomes worse. The team falls apart, separately. During the process, Bennett is being pumped with anti-inflammatories, at the same time, a running record (apparently documented as well) is being established that his arm is getting worse. Because the team doctor doesn't really acknowledge the severity of his injury and how it's getting worse, he's becoming skeptical. This is exacerbated when he takes the bye week to get the medicine out of his system. He hasn't missed one game to this point.

Subsequently, after getting different opinions, three other doctors say that surgery is immenint - key word. He's on a sinking ship that has pushed him through a worsening injury.

Instead he options to take the surgery, an investment in the last two years of his contract - he wants to be effective long term. They take it as a ride to IR, free money and next year being a retirement for him, based on a tweet.

Unfortunately, we cannot assume any context of this tweet - how serious it was, how much arguing had been done to this point, etc., but the Packers do not enjoy this string of actions.

So the Packers send him shipping. The Patriots, a former team that he enjoyed playing for, doctors for the team whom he trusts, claims him. He's cleared, but it's still obvious - surgery is imminent. The better environment makes him more dedicated. The staff, with which he holds more trust, makes him feel comfortable - probably assures him that he'll need work on it soon - and he decides to play.

I dunno man, I had to type all that out to process it. Bennett probably shouldn't have made that tweet - that being said - if what Bennett is saying has truth to it, I'm assuming the Packers Dr. didn't outright force him to play, but possibly didn't acknowledge the worsening injury as much as he should. When it was too late, they say he's failed to disclose an injury after he decides for surgery. Had Bennett had a better, more honest communication path from the doctor, I'm sure this would have played out a bit differently.

I just wasted a bunch of time but whatever, welcome Bennett, you're one of my favorite NFL players.

Perspectives on a diagnosis of a partially torn rotator cuff/labrum ...

Team doctor: As long as you're able to manage the discomfort with painkillers, you should be able to finish out he season without significant further damage.

"Outside" doctors/surgeons: "Holy s**t! You need surgery, STAT! Before your arm falls off!!"

My doctor: "Put some ice on it. Sleep on your other shoulder. At age 65, you probably shouldn't be playing football anymore. Here's a scrip for 5mg oxy. Take 'em as needed until we cut you off because you're taking too many. I'd recommend surgery, but that would probably cost more than your last decade of income and your damn Medicare ain't gonna cover that ish."

Of course Reiss will be in Denver, but he might play too?
He was an immediate upgrade over Allen the minute he went to baggage claim at Logan
